Remember, only white men can be racist. Ask Dianne Abbott or David Lammy.

Re: Little things that irritate you
I apologise if this is the wrong place but what is racist about 'blacking up'? A genuinely serious question. I am White and I am in no way offended by 'white chicks'.

I agree, jastons. 'Browning, blacking, whiteing up', is what people have always done, at fancy dress parties.
In & of itself, it doesn't seem racist.

Re: Little things that irritate you
'Blackface, which was more prevalent in the past, particularly in the entertainment industry, involves white people painting their faces darker - and is widely condemned as a racist caricature.'
Well, that does appear to be quite a large current view.
Isn't context important or even everything though? Going Browned up or Blacked up to a fancy dress party in 2001 as 'Aladdin', seems pretty innocent, imo.
If Trudeau was regularly going around these days, 'Blacked up', you could well understand him being criticised. Isn't this also more about his political opponents using this to attack & ultimately defeat him?
Not all Black people want White people to be 'offended on their behalf'. They actually find it quite patronising & condescending.

Justin Trudeau, denying that he is a racist, at a recent party conference.

Re: Little things that irritate you
You could ask that question about a lot of things. I don't understand why it's OK to make a Hollywood film about two black guys 'whiting up' but it's not OK when it's the other way around.

It appears we're in a time of being offended by fancy dress outfits now.

Who's saying it's ok?
I've managed to go 55 years without once finding myself wearing blackface makeup. It was actually quite easy to avoid.
I'm asking you, then, Jastons: why bother doing it?

Re: Little things that irritate you
“Stereotyped blackface characters developed: buffoonish, lazy, superstitious, cowardly, and lascivious characters, who stole, lied pathologically, and mangled the English language. Early blackface minstrels were all male, so cross-dressing white men also played black women who were often portrayed as unappealingly and grotesquely mannish, in the matronly mammy mold, or as highly sexually provocative.”

Friends had a themed fancy dress party to come as your music icon, as most of mine are black I "blacked up", was I being racist or paying homage?

Re: Little things that irritate you
It feels like this conversation is on a permanent loop in Kumb.
Context. It's all about context.
Historically white people have not been mocked and discriminated against with the use of white face, so some shitty Wayans brothers movie is not going to be a problem for most white people.
Clearly racism can go both ways and any suggestion that only white people can be racist is clearly misunderstanding what the word means. But again, due to historical context, imagery that is offensive to one race will not automatically be as offensive to another if reversed. I'm pretty sure most people on here are smart enough to get that despite claiming confusion.
And if you went to a party 'blacked up' as a tribute to someone as opposed to mocking, then clearly that does not make you a racist. Just a bit ill-advised perhaps.
