I always assumed it was to differentiate between the city of Durham and the county of Durham. No idea why its not called Durhamshire or something, though.

Thanks to my job, I know that five wagons of ballast are needed for the Down line in Elstree tunnel, which is a smidge under 1km long.
One wagon holds 57t, so that's 285t/km. Multiply by the number of km of the network, that will give you the number of tonnes required.
Now you just need to find out how many individual stones are in a tonne
