It's a bit late but got to mention that I was in the "frog & rosbif in Paris when we got slaughtered by spurs. Place was dead no atmosphere at all, beer was OK for France, food was crap and of course the result just made things worse but it is one of the only places that I know in paris where you can watch Premier League football. Met a yank from New York who was also there supporting the Irons he came from a WHU family, his Dad was WH and had settled in the US.

Ye Olde Thirsty Pig was The Minstrel Wine Bar when I was a lad, and anything less like a wine bar would be hard to imagine! It was the hangout for all the local goths and greebos, that weren't hanging out at the Druids Arms (just up the street from Earls).EugeneSpeed wrote: I used to drink in Earls occasionally when I was at college in Maidstone. My mate worked there.
Popped back recently and there are some cracking pubs in that town. My favourites are Ye Olde Thirsty Pig and the Flower Pot. The Paper Mill is alright too, but Tovil is a complete **** hole and I'll never forget the locals faces when we went in there with a black mate (in 2014 I might add).
Strangely, I don't think I ever went to Earls. Duuno why, I must have gone to pretty much every pub in town at some point, even The Pilot which back then was where you went when you'd been thrown out of everywhere else.

The Windsor Castle is ok for hiding from work for a bit.
Constitution is ok, for a bit of cricket in the Summer.
Jugged Hare for a quiet lunchtime.
But yeah. You're right its pretty awful

Xmas lunch in The Badgers Wood in Baughurst. Used to be a bit of a dive but now an excellent village pub - not part of a chain, excellent ales and some of the best pub food I have had in a good while - really tasty and hearty portions. 8.5/10

The Jugged Hare, Barbican London. Banged out with pissed up suited and booted city boys at 5:30 PM, all shouting at each other, two small wines cost nearly £15, bar staff mainly surly Latin American types, banging loud Latin American music, hot, hardly any seats, were refused by the staff to be allowed to sit at the empty barstools because "they are for diners only" and the wine (white) tasted of nothing. We drunk up and left. Overall 1/10
The Barbican Bar, Barbican Centre, London. Fully staffed with friendly courteous staff, clean, a very decent bottle of Rose cost a reasonable £20, plenty of very comfy padded seats and settee's, lots or room, nice people to talk to, no music, so very chatting friendly - a very nice place. Limited choice of Ales and lager though. Overall 8/10
The Galvanisers Union, Bromley by Bow, London. I like this pub a real lot and if it wasn't for the horrendous bar prices, it would be my local. Blue Moon lager ( a lager which shows ale drinkers how hoppy, zesty and flowery larger can be in a very tasty way) at about £5,00 a pint anyone? This was my beer of choice last night and I only had two so it was doable. That said they always have an ale on at £3.00 a pint but it is usually too bitter for me in the literal sense of the word.
The price of the beer was offset by the free food that was given away to customers. Apparently a party had over-ordered their food and as it is all hand made and fresh they were giving it away. The two slices of spinach and feta tart plus the jumbo cheese ploughman's sandwiches that I eat went down a treat - they were very tasty to boot.
The music was good, the pub busy but not over crowded and the bar staff friendly and helpful.
Overall 8/10

Sadly a decent pub ruined by converting it to a gastro pub - I'd probably say that it's actually a restaurant with a bar. Just down the road (the other side of the brewery) a perfectly decent pub The St.Pauls Tavern was converted into the Chiswelll street dining rooms a few years back. Again owned by the same group, along with The Gun in the Isle of Dogs which was a great pub now turned into a gastro pub.WHU Independent wrote:The Jugged Hare, Barbican London. Re: what pub have you been in today ? Rate it out of 10
On Friday, as the elder statesman thereof, I took my team on a mystery tour of a few outlets, for our festive knees up.
Started at The Blackfriars, opposite the station of the same name, a pub I have recommended on here several times already. On the last Friday before Christmas, the place heaved (as expected), but the range of beers and numbers of staff kept it a highly pleasurable experience. Had two different ales, both delicious. 8.5/10
Went for some grub
Next stop the newly-named Inn of Court (previously the Melton Mowbray) just down the road from Chancery Lane tube. By this time, lots of other parties are in 4th gear/full swing, which added to the fun of our evening in terms of people-watching, up until the point that, to our horror, they started handing around song sheets for carols that people then agriculturally bellowed through. The rounds in there were a touch pricey too. Still, fairly rarely, they had Amstel and, because I needed to keep going, I went onto them.
Used to spend a fair few of my evenings many years ago in the Mowbray. Its a characterful pub, with a fairly decent range of beers and ales, but I can't really get my head around the name change.
5.5/10
Ended the evening in the Grand Union bar, off Cursitor Street (EC4), because the younger lot wanted a boogie. Just strolled in about 1130, clearly into a large local office's party. By this point, only the committed were still in there. Not a place I'd even contemplate looking in either for the beers, or indeed, if I was sober, but, for a shouted conversation over a few classics, which included that old Erasure tune that used to get the whole Toothbrush up on its feet a couple of decades ago, and that 3 or 4 drinks that frankly none of us needed, it was well worth it.
As was the sight of this couple running to the dancefloor and slipping over as they reached it. We roared at that, I can tell you.
Not marking that one, in the circumstances.
Meanwhile, yesterday:
A restorative quickie in The Green Man, Berwick Street, Soho. Standard pub, nicely maintained, in the face of regular tourist trade. Decent enough pint of IPA, but not really much to the place generally.

The Old Kings Head, Hampton Wick.
This place is woeful. If it didn't show the football i wouldn't be seen dead in there. Rubbish service and a rubbish atmosphere, and more importantly the beer is not good.

The Foresters, Hampton Wick.
Comfortably the best pub in the area. I didn't eat there last night but the food is excellent.

The Mitre in Greenwich, a bit rammed but not bad at all. It had clocks all over the place showing different times which threw in an element of mystery you don't get with most pubs.........

I love Salt Beef n' all. Have you had it in the Old Fountain, Old Street?
The Jugged Hair in Barbican/Moorgate is funny one for me. Decent enough pub when not full to the rafters. They serve a pint of ale at too low a temperature. Completely ruined the Adnams Bitter I had last time I went in.
Much better pub across Finsbury Square called the Flying Horse.
