Is that a genuine red squirrel or a bog standard grey squirrel “enhanced post production”?

It's a bog standard grey squirrel with low morning sunlight coming through the trees reflecting off it's coat.

most apps have a crop option which will get you what Wembley is talking about.......

and it's usually a "movable" tool where you can just take those bits out without losing 1/2 of your photo

it's okay mate - you should have seen the work I put it with my work before I forgot to save the adjusted photo

a word of advice if you haven't figured it out already, when you save the adjusted work, call it something different so that you keep the original in it's "original" format. you want to save the work adjusted leaving the original alone. you might want to do something else with it when you have figured everything out and you can't do that if you have changed the original

Or following on from that - create a folder for that day you've been out - then have sub-folders. JPG and Edits. And save your edited images in to the edits folder. Saves renaming and you keep the original as is. If you want to be really sure you don't over-write the original, set your camera to take images in RAW and JPG, and edit the RAW files. It's non-destructive, which means you cannot over-write the file by accident - it's impossible. Both Luminar and Aurora will edit RAW images and save in JPG. Remember that JPG is a lossy format - which means it's compressed and gets de-compressed and compressed again each time you open it. each time you do that, you lose some of the image quality, and it's actually a noticeable loss of quality after around 15-20 openings - which may sound a lot, but if it's a good image that you keep going back to, it won't take long before you do notice the difference.

Personally, I only ever work with RAW files, because you can do so much more with them and get so much more extra detail out of the shot, as they're unprocessed, where as JPG have already been processed by the software in your camera.

Read this article, and it explains it in better terms than me

Bristol -
Some cameras , my Nikon D7000 for example , have a feature whereby you can crop photos in camera with no need for software .
Haven't used it myself but it does exist .

Just bought a Canon eos 60d. Went out and took some photos without realising it was in RAW mode.

Downloaded the photos onto my laptop and they've come out in CR.2 files. Is there any way of changing them into forum friendly (JPEG?) files to make them more user friendly? I have photoshop pro if that's any use?

Ta muchly

Not sure what ' Photoshop Pro ' is , Jevs but if you've taken your photos in RAW you're going to need a RAW converter - there are some free ones out there which have appeared since I was a lad and I have zero experience of them so cannot recommend . Your Photoshop Pro may well do the trick .
I use Lightroom 6 mostly but I do have a copy of Photoshop Elements 11 too [ which I sometimes use but not often ] , LR6 only available through subscription only now unless you can find a copy on Ebay [ never buy a download version off Ebay only a physical copy ] .

My old Nikon D7000 allows you to take RAW + Jpegs simultaneously or Raw or Jpeg [ I only use RAW now ] your camera may too - for now I would stick your camera on Jpeg only until you find a RAW Converter .

You cannot convert them to JPEG as such. The cr2 file is exactly what your sensor sees to the minutest detail.

What you can do now is process them in camera raw which is part of photoshop, then you export the processed image in to jpeg.

The images probably look a bit dull, a bit wishy-washy in cr2 - it's now up to you to develop them in photoshop to bring the colours and the detail out.

By chance, you've taken and saved in the best way

Oh, and always save a raw copy! That's your 'digital negative'. Save in jpg AND raw which your camera does, and always edit your raw file. It's non-destructive - you can never save over it, and if you go wrong you can start again - unlike jpg which you can overwrite and then accidentally wipe the original shot.

All this faffing around with a picture no longer makes it "amateur".

Not quite sure how you work that out, as people have been developing photos as a hobby since photography was invented.
