A place to call home: where next?

Post by Up the Junction »

Anyone reside in Watton (Norfolk) or around this part of the world?

Am possibly on the move and have seen a couple of places I really like round there, but don't know the area at all.

Also (and not a million miles away), how's Thetford these days?

Used to live in Norfolk but managed to escape. I found it quite dull. It's nice on a hot sunny day, but I found it quite tedious the rest of the year. At least they've built a big distributor road now that makes it easier to get around. It's a big county too and seems to take forever to get out of. I found it quite amazing the number of people I spoke to in Norfolk that had spent their whole life there and never left the county. I used to call it Alcatraz. North Norfolk is ok, near the coast. At least there's a few rolling hills there and a bit of varied scenery.

Had a good friend that lived in Brandon. He loved the area. Never heard of Watton until I googled it.

I live on a boat on the Broads near Wroxham which is six miles from Norwich.
Watton quite market town, Thetford is a **** hole, Wells Next The Sea, Blakeney expensive property wise (But very peaceful).
Outskirts of Norwich is probally best.

"This is a local town, for local people; there's nothing for you here"..

Found on the 'net:
'I have recently moved to watton at first i thought it was ok and then i went out for a night down the pubs with some old mates from norwich and as soon as we said we where from norwich they started hitting us and chucking pints over us in the pub they where kicked out and we had to be escorted out by the police….they then followed us home and smashed my windows and rolled my friends car not 1 car but 3 cars!!!!……the next day i told my uncle who lives here and he wasn't even shocked i was stunned……every night there are little s***s around town either spray painting , pissed off their head, randomly beating people up or just terrorising anyone who is not from watton…u can go to lovell garden estate to be greeted by 100 c***s scattered about the alleyways and not greeted nicely trust me…or you can go to stokes estate where my uncle lives ( y i dont know? ) which is okay in the day but at night time is full of louts drinking at the park and pissing off everyone who is within eye distance……but the worst place is the town centre as the kids and even the “adults” don't like outsiders and once they've had 20 stellas will destroy any outsider who gets in their way!! …..i have been here for 3 months now and i thought things would get better as they could of been a one off but let me tell you it just got worse there is usually a fight everyday in the town centre and there has been 3 stabbings since i've been here so i can honestly say i'm going to be moving'..

I can't tell if they're joking or not. Never been but I thought it looks & sounds very nice!
Can well believe Ted's appraisal of Thetford though. Very large Portuguese population there (not in any sense saying that's why it's a sh*thole though, just saying).

Thetford has lot drug use and anti-social behaviour, but you get that in most places I guess.

The only thing I remember from my trips to Norfolk is that it regardless of where you are, there'll be a road sign for Beccles.

Do now Samba.
We used to move everyday as this was the rule with Broads Authority who run it (24hrs only mooring).
We now have a mooring, and only take boat out in late Autumn, Winter and Spring, because Summer time is a nightmare when you own your own boat.
Your likely be smacked into and when you complain, the hire boat people will say things like f*** off, or ya not sinking are you. :fsake:

That's a lovely life you've got there, Ted. Fresh air & big, old skies. Had many, many happy hire holidays up there & yes, occasionally some hirers can be utter c*nts.

I’ve been living full time in Norwich for about 3 years now, we initially chose it, as it was close enough to get to easily from Essex for weekends away and seemed to have plenty going on to occupy us. We still really like it here. It has plenty of pubs, restaurants, cinemas and theatres, which gives us plenty to see and do. Personally I couldn’t live in the ‘historic market’ towns like Watton, as to me, they seem to be dying a slow death. There doesn’t seem anything to do in them and the only people that live there seem to be old people, or youngsters that want to leave. From friends who used to live in Hingham, we know there are lot of drug problems in these small places, especially with teenagers.
The north coast, like Holt and the broads, like Wroxham, are generally considered ‘nicer’ but this obviously makes them more expensive and touristy. I tend to visit the areas on the north coast and the broads for days out, which I enjoy, but I couldn’t stand to live in them, as there doesn’t seem anything to do and they seem to be full of old people. I’m old, but I wouldn’t want to be living somewhere with just older people, it’s another reason I like Norwich as it has the UEA and also the University of Arts, so plenty of youngsters around.
Just my ideas, biased obviously, I know people living in little places like Happisburgh on the North Norfolk coast that absolutely love it, but they are old and are happy pottering in their gardens and somehow manage to amuse themselves, it would drive me around the bend, but each to their own.

:) Had a feeling you were going to say that, UtJ.
If you really like the place maybe spend a night or two up there sometime, to get a feel for the place. It's a bit tricky, isn't it? Unless you actually know someone that lives somewhere, how can you really know what somewhere is like.

Good advice Samba. As it is, I'm slowly becoming the fella thosewerethedays refers to above so what's happening outside my castle walls often matters not. I'd quite like a bigger one though (well, more garden anyway to potter around) so this seems like a good solution for now.

The main issue is not me though, but how it'd work out for the kids. Anyway, we're off up there next week for a few viewings so that'll give us some idea.
