Re: Everton v West Ham United: Match Thread
The problem is that we have a lot of average players in our squad. I think people expect too much from what is a rather attritional bunch of players, not the must technically gifted, nor pacey. 4-5-1 is the right idea, especially away from home given the players available.
From the team today, only Jarvis and Diame are ball carriers capable of causing damage. The rest of our midfield is pedestrian. GON must think he's Pirlo spraying about hollywood balls. Collison isn't going to cause much damage on the wing. Nolan bar one shot was non-existant.
Lets hope G&S are ready to dig deep otherwise we could be in for a real grind next season.

Yep, tough tackling Frank Lampard on the right wing would have made all the difference.Puff Daddy wrote:Just wonder whether our midfield might have had a bit more bite about it today, had we had Fat Frank in it instead of Collison ? Well, what d'ya guys think ?

Possibly for the first time ever, I was happy when we went one down - knowing both that we were safe and that being behind might cause us to have a right go at it away from home and make us worth watching for a change. Got that one badly wrong....men against boys today.
Have to say, across the two games, pound-for-pound Everton have impressed me the most out of any team we've played this season. I have a lot of respect for them as a club.

I don't think the Carlton >>>Diame sub did us any favours.
We had started to get a toehold in the game between the 25-45 minute mark with Nolan having two good efforts, but going 4-4-2 against them after half time made no real sense with the players we had on the pitch then, even though Diame was deservedly hooked.

Puff,
Collison was poor but so was the whole midfield and, to be honest, Diame was even worse( you know that french african that you're a big fan of and big advocate of attracting similar players to the club to replace noble, collison and the like). Funny that you didn't mention him......not like an agenda going on in your post
I could see what sam was trying to do today (not saying i agreed with it)....not for the first time when set up like that though we conceded early after kick off and game plan went out the window. We seem to look a bit shell shocked for 15-20 when the opposition has the cheek to score when we're trying to be compact.
Agree with bubbs on the sub - i would have subbed diame and brought joey on at half time and not carlton but easy said in hindsight. Doubt it would have changed the result with so many players having an off day

I think that's about it for me now with away games - 2 more years of this negative garbage, is more than I can now take. It's not that under Allardyce we're that hoof ball...............he's just so dreadfully negative.........and the defending is all last ditch. There's got to be a modicum of entertainment................well, there has for me, and under this dullard there just isn't

Bring back Avram?
In all seriousness, I do expect us to do better away from home next season but what do you expect from a team that's just been promoted back into the league? This season has been very successful for West Ham, it's a shame our fans are never happy.

I'd expect Andy Carroll, a couple of freebies/cheapos in defence and maybe another £7m on another striker. Hardly digging deep in the context of the windfall the game is about to receive through the new TV deal. I'd be delighted to be wrong, but leopards don't change their spots.Mike420 wrote:Lets hope G&S are ready to dig deep otherwise we could be in for a real grind next season.

That is the nub of it ~ I'm afraid. But, at least this is recognised by G&S and Big Sam too and we willl be working on improving on this in the summer. Always assuming we are going to get one that is

Agreed. They made us look like cack today, and the result at the home match was very flattering to us. Ran rings round us both times.Aceface wrote:...men against boys today.

Still, onwards and upwards. Looking forward to an attack-minded formation and strategy next weekend. Not optimistic I'm gonna get it, but you never know.

Souness was on Sky the other day.
He was captain of an incredibly successful Liverpool team yet he said that once they'd reached their pre-set goal for a season - winning the league - they simply couldn't raise their selves after it.
We're playing a bit like that. So are Man U and Man City.

People saying Noble should have his operation on the shoulder injury, I thought he did have it & was working his way back to fitness?
Didn't the club say something about it a while ago, that they though they could correct the trapped nerve problem but it keeps coming back & so have decided to operate?

His shoulder is a lot better and as I say he wanted to start today. But the manager and specialists obviously don't think he's ready.Adie64 wrote:People saying Noble should have his operation on the shoulder injury, I thought he did have it & was working his way back to fitness?

Sure. We're not winners. Also-rans, in the main. For this season, that's fine by me.upton o'good wrote:Yes, but winners hit a target early, and say "now, what more can I do"
