It will be interesting to see what the media reaction would be if he did play and fans give him verbals ( i remember the graham rix sex case chants at chelsea many years ago)
Of course it would show the total hypocrisy of the media in that you are allowed to offend and bully some people if it is socially acceptable to do so.
For instance, the media would in their own way support him getting slated but have a problem with the harry kane chants.

I agree it's about time he turned things around as he's been pretty dire since about around xmas.

Hopefully Downing will be allowed to drift more and get involved centrally.

For weeks now, he's been stuck out on the wing 'doing a job'.

He is still alongside Silva, Hazard and Fabregas at the top of the PL charts in 'key passes', 'assists'.

Possibly the pass and move of the season for us

I think Advocaat will impress on his new team the need to get the basics right. So I expect their shape to be pretty rigid - compact and defence minded. No gung-ho stuff from them this weekend. So the onus (rightly) will be on us and unless we get an early goal we'll need to be patient.

Looking forward to this and to the Black Lion afterwards. Be nice to win and I think we will. 2-0 or 2-1.

My early season optimism has nearly all but gone. Everything seems to be going Pete Tong right now. It wouldn't surprise me at all to end up losing this one 0-1. Either Defoe from ten yards or a Larsson free kick.

I'd be inclined to rest/drop Downing.

Noble, Song, Amalfitano, Nene at the tip. Cole and Sakho up top as a conventional forward pair.

Missing Cattermole's bite in midfield opens up the possibility for intricate play. Cole kamikazeing his way around their back line with Sakho making use of the chaos to get in and behind.

We've gone too wide, too often with our midfield with a real perceptive lack of results.

Going to this which will be the first game attended since the WBA fiasco in the FA Cup, Shirley it can only get better than that day out?

I see this game going one of two ways, true to form we will oblige a club that have just sacked their manager and they will grind out a 1-0 way win OR we will finally give someone a hammering. I dont see a draw happening.

Even with our injuries and our poor run of form we should still have enough to beat this lot.

Anything other than a comfortable win will not be acceptable in my book.

Totally agree, Nene at least deserves a chance to show what he has got.

I don't care who he plays in midfield as long as Kouyate is in there.

This is one game we do not need to play safe, they are one of the poorest teams in the league going forward, so we should concentrate entirely on winning the game and picking a defence that stays organised, that alone ought to be enough to stop them scoring.

We need our fittest best attacking players on the field tomorrow, playing in their best position.

I can understand not chucking a youngster in last weekend's game, but either you have been looking at him in training this week or you will shift one of our other defenders around, that ought to be enough.

Putting Kouyate in the back 4, whilst understandable in games against better teams. will just weaken us where we need to be good tomorrow.
