4-4-2 is a poor way to get more attacking players on the pitch. Leaves you too exposed and you generally limit the wingers, in modern football. If you want 4-4-2 you're gonna need Byram and Masuaku playing on the wings with the personnel we've got. And probably not Lanzini playing.

I doubt a simple 4-4-2 will have its day again in my lifetime

Adrian
Zaba Fonte Reid Cress
Antonio Lanzini Obiang Arnie
Chicarito Sakho

Easy
not a single decent team players 442 anymore

spurs play 1 up top with alli supporting

city dont play it

united dont play it

chelsea and arsenal dont

Munich, Madrid, PSG, Barca dont

and with so many teams not playing it if you do play it you leave yourself open to being overrun in the middle

fans call for 442 like its the only way to play attacking football when ironically 442 leaves you unable to attack as your so overrun all the time

also you cant drop Hart he is in good form.

I will never understand the obsession with only playing one up top. A lone striker is too easy to isolate and is much easier to mark by a defensive midfielder and two center backs than two out and out strikers.
how do spurs score so many goals with Kane on his own?

and what about Lukuku at united?

as a time traveller from the 1920's i wish slav would forget about all this fannying around with defenders and play four up top like the game is supposed to be played.

Whatever formation we play, I fail to see why some people are picking Arnie in the side, the bloke is useless.

very few mgrs play a true 442 these days. General view is it leaves you outnumbered in midfield.
I tend to agree, midfield is where the modern game is won and lost. Can't help to think Chelsea was missing Kante in the middle against Palace, Zaha and Townsend were waltzing through the midfield that game.

We shouldn't need to play 4-4-2 given between Lanzini, Obiang, Chicaritho and Arnie, we've got enough passing and movement to create without need to go 2 up top. Having an extra man in the middle gives us extra protection.

playing two up top made sense when we were in absolute tatters with every loose pass leading to another minus on the goal difference. now we're actually getting our act together there's no need for it unless the other team have completely surrendered midfield and we're going for the overload.

kouyate is barely a footballer but is immense for our hustle and energy levels, obiang is as creative an element as any of our attacking players and our best shot at distributing from deep, lanzini needs to play in the middle with the freedom of stratford.

there's your midfield triangle, build around it.

Looking forward to this as Carroll can't play and we will look a much better side for it. 2-0 us.

As others have said, Obiang in for Carrol in a 4-2-3-1.

However Zabaleta is one yellow away from a one game suspension.
With the next three games being BHA (H), Palace (A) and Liverpool (H) Slav might make a tactical switch using Byram for this one.
I think I'd be inclined to go with Zab and see where the cards fall (rubbish pun intended).

Because Kane and Lukaku are not isolated by their midfield.

The game itself is free to watch on Sky Mix on Friday night from 7,00

Fonte has finally found his form, I'd keep him in for now. Apart from that, as above please Slav.

4-2-3-1

.................Hart
Zabba Reid Fonte Arthur
......Obiang Kouyate
Antonio .................... Lanzini
...............Hernandez
.................Sakho

I'd like to see Martinez on the bench and if we're looking comfortable, given 20 minutes at the end.

The problem with playing fonte is that Brighton like to play balls over and through to the Chelsea loanee who loves to play off the back line.
