I agree with your assessment of their midfield and us not being able to go toe to toe with them.Humbug wrote:We just can't compete with the Man City's midfield because they are stronger , more athletic and skilful . I know this is sacrilege but I'd just put 'stoppers' in midfield and go direct. Use Antonio , Fredericks down the wings and use Snodgrass and Anderson to double up with them and hit crosses into the box . Use AC to unsettle them in their penalty box and use either Arnie or Chico to try and feed off the knock-downs. Burnley do this very effectively although it failed against Newcastle yesterday (but worked against Spuds). Although I wish we could , we don't have the players who can outplay Man City using neat football.
But I doubt we will see much of a change in Pellegrini's tactics. We've been hearing a lot this season about him trying to instil this 'big club mentality'.
Nor do I think we should change the tactics. Realistically Pell has been working with the team week in and week out since the summer trying to get them to play football. Even if we did go up there and park the bus they would probably find a way through just because we aren't really familiar with that style of play. The difference between us and Burnley is that they have been doing it for years under Dyche, we'd get at most a couple of days to practice.
If the likelyhood is that we lose either way, tonight is a free hit so we can afford to treat it as a learning experience. We may even ship a few more goals by trying to play expansively, but in the long run it might help us get to where we want to be faster.
Plus on top of that, there's been a lot made about how City have suffered without Fernandinho so it might actually not be the worst idea to play the likes of Nasri as they might get some joy in that area of the pitch.

Fabianski - one of the leagues best, he'll need to have a good game.
Fredericks Diop Ogbonna Cresswell - Fredericks' pace will be a great help, Diop and Ogbonna will ensure no aerial assault, but Aguero is a tricky customer.
Antonio Noble Rice Snodgrass Anderson - the same disciplined midfield as against Liverpool with the same game plan.
Chicharito - we won't get many chances, let's hope he can take one.

Funny one this, i'm far from expecting a result let alone a win but i'm excited for the game.
Past few years (Payet season aside) I never get up for these but with Pellegrini in charge I am still excited to watch knowing that we will at least try and score a few goals (even if we don't).
As much i would hate Liverpool to win the league would be massive to walk away with 3 points tonight.

Fabianski
Fredericks | Diop | Ogbonna | Cresswell
Rice | Noble
Antonio | Nasri | Anderson
Arnoutovic
With Fernandinho out, who has been their key player this season, we need to exploit the centre of the pitch. I like Snodgrass, but he isn't technically consistent enough to rely on. Nasri will be up for it, and if/when he tires, Lanzini can replace him.
Press tactically, and if Anderson, Antonio and Arnoutavic are allowed space they'll cause them problems. Pep will know this. Defend well and we can nick a point.

We'll totally boss it tonight, 2-0 up with five minutes to go, and then we'll very calmly put it in our own net three times. Oops, sorry Jurgen.
Re: ⚽ Manchester City v West Ham Utd: match thread (27/02)
For some reason I am really looking forward to the game tonight. Although we will probably get beat I am curious to see how we perform against such quality opposition. We did well against Liverpool not so long ago and beat Arsenal so there is no reason we can't at least give them a bit of a game.

So, a nice baptism of fire for Johnson, then. Go on lad, no better stage than this

If that's true I think it's safe to say goodbye Masuaku. Trusting an out of position teenager over him.

Sheesh, I wasn't expecting Obiang, Nasri or Johnson, tbh, but fingers crossed!

Bit of a strange decision to just throw Ben Johnson straight in away at Manchester City. But if Pellegrini thinks he's ready, who am i to disagree?

Sterling and Sane have it, Zabaleta and Cresswell do not.
