Decent win, performance could be better, kudos to Newport who played really well I thought. Abrahams up top for them impressed with his non-stop chasing and pressing.
Onto the next one!

Judging from the tv pictures, that goal seemed to boost Fornals confidence, he was well happy with his goal. This could only be a good thing. This is potentially our finest player.
When was the last time we had more than one really good player at once?

Ropey performance but we got it done.
Wilshere and the keeper were decent. The rest.....

We got through, that's all that matters because most of our game was terrible. Glad to see Wilshere take responsibility and grab the game by the horns when everyone else was shunning responsibility.

Gonna be bloody Luton away, ain't it...bubbles1966 wrote:Nice win.
Roughly a 50% chance of lower league opposition in the next round too.

On a positive note it was an away win and we're in the hat for the next round .
On the other hand , Newport were given 5 clear chances which better teams would take at least a couple of.
More worringly Diop can probably look forward to being in his 5th different back 4 this season on Saturday, and our impact sub went off with what looked like a torn hamstring early doors .
We need to pick a player to sit either side of Diop and stick by them, handing him fresh faces every week is not a good way to develop him.

That was the darkest game I’ve ever been to. I’m told it looked ok on the box but it was like only half the floodlights were on.
2 century old turnstiles, a nice Swiss Chalet tea bar with good sausage rolls, no queues, a portacabin toilet, a large bar, a smokers’ area, friendly staff, tight to the pitch... a good ground to watch football in.
Thought the banter between our own stands was the highlight of the day. ‘Getting wet in the cheap seats’

Professional job against a tricky side who had seen off a few prem teams prior to us.
For those moaning we gave them 3 or 4 chances, well I think you need to find me a team who has gone away where that team hasn't had chances, I would say it is nigh on impossible. The important thing was we took two of our several good chances whilst they took n one, and that is the gulf in class.
I thought Sanchez did ok, dawdled a few times as he does but his general all round game was good. Wilshere was the stand out for me, three of four exquisite passes, set up one and scored one. Ajeti battled up front on his own and looks a decent player, didn't get bullied off the ball for a small fella, and Balbuena did well too. Diop for a big fella don't half get bullied too much for my liking.
A good win and in the hat for the next round.
Antonio will be out for over three months - torn same hamstring as season before last.

Can’t even see a write up of the match in the times, this morning.
You can bet we would have been top of the Sports section, if we had slipped up.

Re: ⚽ Newport County v West Ham United: FL Cup Match Thread
Good win last night, clearly some players are rusty & lacking fitness so game time was important for them. One thing for sure, we have a very good squad now.
New keeper looks good, dominated his area well I thought.
Gutted for iron Mike, he is clearly enjoying his football under a manager that rates him and goes and does his hamstring, guess he is out for a month or two.
Anderson, always strikes me as he does not want to be playing the lower league teams, then every now and then he decides to play, he really is a Rolls Royce when he wants to be, such a talented player.
Yes we gave up chances, our defence needs work but changing personnel doesn't help, I said to a colleague expect a lot of 3-2 results this season for us in the PL, hopefully we will be on the right end of the majority...
All in all, good nights work for us

Re: ⚽ Newport County v West Ham United: FL Cup Match Thread
we are through at a cost, losing one of our best players for a long lay off.
lets hope we get a home draw and avoid the scousers and city.
a mixed bag of a performance and not that encouraging really.
Roberto - good. did well and looked the part 8
zabaleta - usual battling all action performance 7
diop - struggled against their best player but still made a few important tackles 6
Balbuena - also struggled a bit but good to see him back 7
cresswell - another poor performance. Newport players went past him at ease. poor crosses 5
sanchez - slow on the ball , some poor passes but a few good tackles. 6
wilshere - awful first half apart from late goal which came about due to his poor pass. better after the break. not up to premier standard at the moment. 7
Anderson - class above everyone else , played well within himself 7
Snodgrass - tried but was poor 5
ajeti - tried and a few useful touches, nt ready on this performance 6
Antonio - did he warm up properly ? such a shame 7
coventry - a few neat passes, big mistake nearly led to a goal. nervous. 6

I have to agree on Diop. For such an excellent defender he really struggles when it comes to physical battles with strikers. Think of Murray and the Brighton goal a couple weeks back and their big first half chance last night. Think he would benefit from copying Liverpool a bit where Van Dijk is very rarely the one involved in those scraps but is always able to use pace to cover round. I think we'd be better off letting the other CB do the man markingDannyboyDJL wrote:Steady, professional performance I thought. We never in too much trouble.
One thing I noticed is that almost every chance of theirs came because of a Diop mistake. I thought he had a shocker tonight. He still looks completely panicked by a ball looped over him, takes risks when he doesn't have to and loves to give away a stupid free kick.
I'd like to see Balbuena and Ogbonna against Norwich because he's been erratic all season.
