Winston Reid

Post by window74 » Wed Jun 20, 2012 2:17 am

So after hearing all about Carlton Cole's 50% cut in wages whilst we were in the Championship, it has emerged that Winston Reid has turned down the chance to represent New Zealand at the Olympics so that he can concentrate on getting a good pre-season under his belt with West Ham.

Have to say this is really good to see, that such commitment is being shown to our great club these days!

Even as a Kiwi... Agreed.

Winston has picked up a few knocks recently and a pre-season conditioning would be the better choice.

and Ricky Herbert is rubbish.

"It would be different if I'd been at the club for six or seven years and I'd been playing regularly then maybe I could have done it, but I needed to work hard this pre-season and make sure the spot's mine at West Ham."
Good lad, I hope he does make the central defence spot his own - hopefully Tomkins and Reid can continue their partnership successfully in the Prem

Indeed
When we got promoted, when looking at our team, there are some bits you think would be good enough as they are for the PL, and other bits where you think improvements are needed

The pairing of Tonks & Reid is one area I feel is plenty good enough. There's a good balance and understanding in that pairing, imo
I'd be more concerned with giving them the support they need, both at FB, and in terms of the midfield in front of them offering a decent level of protection, as these areas seem more in need of improvement than that CB pairing

Big season for Winston and he knows it. Sensible decision.

If this was another player at another club and England we might be a bit upset but as it is West Ham and Winston, get in!

This is all we need. Players showing no desire to play in the Olympic Stadium. tut tut

If the players won't go then how are we to follow?

He deserves a CB starting spot for this alone. I reckon he'll surprise a lot of people this season, his timing and positioning has been fantastic this season. Real footballing brain.

You get the feeling next season is going to make or break his entire career - if he comes through it on top, there's no reason he won't be with us for the best part of the next decade. Pressure is certainly on him, and I really hope he makes it - we need as many players showing this kind of determination to succeed with us as we can get

A slightly different take on things... West Ham refuse NZ permission to take Winston to the Olympics....

I had a Kiwi mate text me ealier saying the same thing, it is all over their news in NZ we are the bad boys by refusing to release him, even though some reports I read since say that Winston has told news sources that it is his decision, it is easier to tarnish WHU than believe one of theirs prefers to put club over country.

A brave and good choice by Winston IMO, NZ football nearly ruined his last season by playing him with the injury he gained whilst playing a friendly and he is right, we pay his wages, he is in the first XI for us but his spot is not assured for next season so he has to prove himself. :crest:
