He was always going to fail at this club.

It's certainly a gamble.

I think Haller will be able to stay fit for the vast majority of our games but it's a lot of pressure on Ajeti if he doesn't.

Thanks for some important goals, Javier.

Fairly obvious where Chico sat in Pellers plans when he couldn't even get in to the starting 11 for our B team against Newport.

Shame we never used him properly, a square peg in a round hole for his whole time here. He'll score wherever he goes, but you could sense his real frustration at being here and it was probably time for all concerned to cut their loses.

It leaves us "bare bones" up top though, especially with an open ended injury to Antonio. All our eggs are in the Haller basket now.

I would have kept him as we're very light up top now but he wanted to go and we are still not a club that can afford a £140k week player on the bench. Probably a business over team decision and now we've got to get to the January window without a hitch.

I'm amazed at how many people on here bemoaning this sale.

He didn't want to be here, he's never really looked the part in our team in any game, and at £120,000p/w is far too expensive to be sat on our bench.

Last season we had Arnautovic who didn't want to be here, Hernandez who didn't want to be here, and Carroll who couldn't keep fit for more than a couple of games, all taking home around £300k p/w between them.

They're now off of our wage bill.

In their place we've got a proper pukka looking striker who appears to be able to do it all, and as his understudy a 22 year old international who ripped it up in the Swiss league the last two seasons.

The only reason this doesn't look as positive as it could is because of Antonio's injury, but realistically we've still got 2 fit strikers for 1 striker position to get us through until January.

Decent looking business thus far.

I think he would probably have featured if he wasn't on the verge of earning the club £8m plus £140k a week for the next 46 weeks.

Imagine if he'd turned his ankle in a Newport divot.

Against the lower mid-table teams, the bottom teams or the teams in the League/s below yes.

But in the years he has been here he has only scored against teams in the top half 4 times.

They were all in his first season: Spurs, Palace, Bournemouth and Chelsea all finished in the top 10 that season.

4 goals in over 2 and a half years!

And the super sub cobblers is a complete myth too. He has only scored 5 times off the bench during his time at the club. And 2 of those goals were against Huddersfield. Arguably the worst team to have graced the Premier League.

Thanks for the odd goals you did chip in with Hernandez. But with that minor contribution for the ridiculous wages he is on and with the constant disappearing acts with his 'bugs' and his agent and himself constantly touting for new clubs every window, including his first January window, I can't say I'll miss him.

I will accept we didn't play completely to his strengths. But I don't condone lazy players and in my opinion he didn't work anywhere near hard enough on the pitch.

The problem isn’t the sale of Chicharito, it’s the lack of planning and spend in the summer anticipating the sale. If you read the timeline that is now being mentioned in reports it seems that he was still trying to find a club in Spain at best and asking to go behind the scenes at worst.

Either another striker or another position could have been strengthened. Less than £25m net spend and £10-15m saves in wages....c£80m difference between income and wages per year.

Lots of posts saying it makes financial sense - does that benefit us? The owners already sitting on 100’s of millions profit on the club, a better profit and loss statement to improve that profit further won’t score a goal for us or act as injury cover for us on the pitch.

Selling is the right decision.

The only issue is that we're temporarily down both Antonio and Xande Silva, but when they return we have our first and second choices in Haller and Ajeti, plus someone who can fill in there and a prospect we have high hopes for.

But realistically, Hernandez was a third choice striker earning, what, 1.5 times that of our next highest earner? Very sensible sale, given it warps our transfer budget.

There was something the other day on a podcast I listened to where one of the hosts suggested that Sanchez's wages at United were causing a complete distortion of what players felt they could justifiably demand in negotiations, and I think Hernandez' would have led to the same issue in the future if we didn't move him on now.

Massive saving over the next year, too - how much is that we've now saved in wages through sales this summer? (Sorry if that's been asked and answered in the last few pages, haven't read them all)

This is definitely the crux of the issue. It crushes our net spend top bottom 4 level, it has continued our annihilation of the wage bill, it leaves us light up top and it was too late to do anything about it.

Now a lower net spend isn't an issue if we've got the squad, but we haven't. A lower wage bill isn't something to moan about - if we've got the squad and we haven't. Does anyone realistically expect the owners to go hard in January? Perhaps if we are in the relegation spots but otherwise no. Is it all an alignment so we can go again next summer and move the squad on - almost certainly not with these owners.

So no, the sale doesn't benefit us as supporters or the team as a squad (unless he was an Arnie style disruption in the dressing room and I've seen no reports of that). It is all pretty rosy though for the board and frankly they can go f*** themselves.

It must be around the £500k a week mark. We could sign Neymar next summer.

Given the wages he was pulling in, the fact that he is out of contract in the summer and that he would be a bench player at most it makes total sense to cash in on him now. He's wanted to leave for a little while as well so we can't really begrudge that either. Ajeti is his replacement and Yarmolenko can also deputise as a striker in an emergency until Antonio and Xande Silva are back fit (worst case Hugill can be recalled in Jan). It's a sensible move by the club and good luck to him at Sevilla

Did anyone actually see Hernandez play for us when he was here?

For all the talk of him being an out and out goalscorer or offering something different, it was like playing with 10 men with him on the pitch.
