Re: Payet? [POLL]
I'm not really interested in the semantics of "world class" that's been done to death before. Burnley's stats etc suggest he's still much better than what we currently have:fmgod wrote:No he's not
"Dimitri Payet – 3.9
Payet topped this list last season and has enjoyed another terrific campaign this time around, creating 82 shooting opportunities for his Marseille team-mates in just 1912 minutes.
His tally of four goals and six assists in Ligue 1 is relatively modest as the No.10 for a team that finished fifth, but Payet will never not be entertaining to watch."

Re: Payet? [POLL]
My heart says 'yes!' but my head is less convinced. Everything about the last season at Upton Park, I remember through a rosy haze and that makes it difficult to give a rational answer.
I doubt his wife would agree anyway.......

A 32-year-old Payet on the wane is still more creative than Lanzini ever has been or ever will be. There, I said it.

Re: Payet? [POLL]
I'd have thought if he did sign for us we'd play him centrally rather than wide, now I think about it. Less dependent on his physical side then. But then - that's Lanzini out, isn't it?
Payet central, Anderson left interchanging with him, Yarmolenko or Antonio right, Arnie up top. That's pretty tidy.

Because Lanzini never has, or never will be, “that” good! He suffers from Ashton-itus and gets better the less he playsBurnley Hammer wrote:A 32-year-old Payet on the wane is still more creative than Lanzini ever has been or ever will be. There, I said it.

Re: Payet? [POLL]
Not for me, especially now we've got Lanzini and Fornals to play the creative midfielder role.

4 goals and 6 assists in Ligue Un last season, is that it?
For reference, Thauvin, who struggled at Newcastle got 16 goals and 8 assists in the same Marseille side.
Whabi Khazri who was part of that atrocious Sunderland side got 13 goals and 6 assists.
Max Gradel, effectively a championship player got 11 goals and 5 assists.
Hardly “world class”.

I think we should have a bit more self respect. Wanting to walk away after having that great season, getting into the france squad, slav chearing his last minute goal vs Romainia like it was his own son and then he turns round and says something along the lines of "I can be very disruptive and I usually get my own way when i want" fat french p###k.

Totally agree. I don't want him anywhere near West Ham ever again.Absolutely Hammered! wrote:I think we should have a bit more self respect. Re: Payet? [POLL]
Isn't it better to look at chances created? I mean, I've just been looking at some videos from last season and he seemed to be creating plenty but the idiots in front of goal kept messing them up. That's not his fault really is it? You want your creative players to make chances. You want your forwards to finish them. It takes two.Patito wrote:4 goals and 6 assists in Ligue Un last season, is that it?

If he's genuinely creating over 80 shooting opportunities for his team-mates and only coming out with 6 assists then Marseille need to have a good hard look at their strike force.

Re: Payet? [POLL]
I see similarities with the Roy Keane situation in the post Saipan debacle. Top quality player, who ducked out in a situation where it could have been handled much much better. Both Keane and Payet had legitimate concerns and issues which needed to be raised and ventilated. However, the way they dealt with left much to be desired, and to the extent that the fans had a more than legitimate right to feel disrespected. In the interim, their performances didn’t burn as brightly as before and the suffered major injuries. In 2004 Keane returned, but his influence was nowhere near as noticeable as it had been in the run up to the 2002 World Cup.
There is no player in recent memory that I have liked as much as Payet, in his prime with WHU. He was a transfer coup, who was a world class player who could change a game at the drop of a hat. Amazing on the dead ball, a superb crosser, and a good Goalscorer. He was phenomenal. But as his interest waned so did his performances, and the last really major intervention I remember him having was the walk in against Boro. France were good enough to win the World Cup without, and he has played very little international football since 2017. Also, if he had continued to develop, we wouldn’t be in the running for him.
I take the point that he has world class play in his locker, but I’m dubious about the thought of re-signing a player, who may be the subject of unresolved issues in the dressing room. I also feel Anderson does an excellent, yet relatively unsung job.

And in a Division that's not even in the top 4 in Europe for quality. Deschamps didnt even tend to bother with him much after that Euro finals once we helped get him back on track.Patito wrote:4 goals and 6 assists in Ligue Un last season, is that it?

The geezer scored 4 goals all season. If he’s creating that many chances per game and only taking one every four games then where did he lose his shooting boots?
Re: Payet? [POLL]
Oh and how come Marseille’s terrible forwards managed to finish more of Thauvin’s chances? Or perhaps Payet’s chances created stats were inflated by him taking all their free kicks and corners....
