The crossed arms hammer thingy

Post by e17 » Sat Jul 27, 2019 9:46 am

Seeing that new picture of Sully with our new lads in the transfer thread doing the crossed arms hammer thingy got me thinking - I know it’s now become the standard publicity pose, and I know Diafra Sakho managed to get away with being a bit of a scrote at times via using it after scoring, but who was the FIRST to do the crossed hammers thingy?

Despite donkeys years attendance, the first time I can really really remember it leaving an impression on me was after little Freddie Sears done it on his debut. Must be much older than that surely?

Anyone know?

Was he before Sears or after mate? I thought he mainly did it on his return with the Mancs?

It’s all just merged into a sea of dodgy kits and bovril in my head Steve

Absolute gentleman & possibly a bit underrated for his time at LB for us

His old man was a proper West Ham fan mate - so maybe he picked it up from somewhere.

As CH says bet there’ll be a scholar on here who knows for sure at some point. Knowing us it probably originated from Alan McKnight trying to save a shot or sainc.

IIRC - the first person to do the crossed hammers thingy was the bloke that made his p*ss, wasn’t it?

We've done this before and I seem to remember him doing it away at Burnley

I might be wrong but I feel like it might have been Bellamy.

This is one of a few things that I don't remember being about from when I was a kid and I don't remember being introduced, yet somehow has become part of West Ham fan folklore. I really should pay more attention.

We've done this before. The earliest photo uncovered is of Dolan and Slater, circa 1986.

He was the pioneer who first combined the crossed arms with making his p*ss, whilst shouting drunkenly at a roomful of country music enthusiasts (Toby Keith fans, specifically). His name was dicksie, and we shall not know his like again. God bless you dicksie, wherever you are. :kumb:

I have fond memories of Carlos Tevez doing it in front of us at the Etihad, whilst waiting for a corner to be taken. The fact that he was playing for Citeh at the time didn't seem to bother him

Remember first clocking some fans doing the Hammers symbol in the late 90s. I like it as a little salute to another Hammer.

The Slater picture put up by utj would make a nice avatar.

I first started going to games regularly in the mid nineties (Redknapp era) and the first time I ever remember seeing it was when Pardew was manager, seem to recall him and Jimmy Walker (using his crutches) both doing it at the promotion parade in 2005. Really not a fan of it to be honest, seems a bit cringe worthy.
