Would expect players like Ajeti, Cresswell, Ogbanna, Roberto to start.

We have adequate players in the squad to field a strong team.
Unfortunately those "strong" teams rarely deliver

This looks like a no-win fixture for us. Beat them and it's only Newport, lose and it's same old west ham. Personally I couldn't give a toss about the mickey mouse cup. Never really have whoever sponsored it. Even the FA cup has become completely devalued, even since 2006 let alone 1980, but at least it still has a bit of glamour (unless it's won by Citeh of course, again)

Rice and others want to play in Europe.
We are more likely to keep them if we do.
This cup is our best chances of qualifying for Europe.
Play the strongest team.
It's not good playing a team that should win, if they don't - as at Wimbledon.

Need to really take this cup seriously.

Plus get a bit of luck along the way.

You never know... someone’s gotta win it. :crest:

Win and it keeps us in with a chance of winning something. Apart from the play offs and intertoto Cup, I've never seen West Ham win anything in my lifetime (born in '88) so' Mickey mouse' or not - I would love us to win the league Cup!

Interesting, are you saying we should throw everything at the league cup and secure European football? Actually not the craziest thing anyone has ever said.

Cardosa's first start in English football as an 18 year old shouldn't come in Wales against a league 2 side. They'll no doubt target him and rough him up.

Does anyone know if Newport are pacey down the wing because honestly even a league 2 footballer with pace will spend the night destroying Cresswell.

Roberto
Johnson Diop Ogbonna Masuaku
Sanchez Rice
Snodgrass
Yarmolenko Ajeti Antonio

Martin, Cardoso, Holland, Coventry, Lanzini, Haller, Anderson

Some youth on the bench and some experience in case we need to turn the game. Wouldn't be opposed to one other youth player starting, maybe Holland on the wing or Powell instead of Snodgrass.

I'd be wary of chucking in a load of reserves and hoping the gel as a team. It normally doesn't do us any favours. Are some of you really turning your noses up at this cup? We are not Liverpool or anyone ya know! We have screamed at the club to take the cups seriously. Of course I'd prefer the FA cup but putting all our eggs in 1 basket is risky and we aren't good enough to pick and choose what to go for. Plus we may need a win to get us going for the season!

Not only is it important to take it seriously, it is also important to give game time to some of those players who are not in the immediate first eleven. If we get injuries they will need to play and better to have
I have no problem with the team we played against Wimbledon in the FA Cup last season. Before kick off the vast majority of posters were happy with it. That similar blend of definite first teamers and subs was able to beat Wimbledon and Macclesfield in the League Cup and Birmingham in the FA Cup. Watford reached the cup final using their full squad in cup games
The line-up wasn't the reason we lost to Wimbledon in the FA Cup. We lost because we didn't rise to the occasion, which is what usually happens in giant killings
Dependent on availability and how other results go before hand, i would look at something as follows:

Fab
Zab
Cresswell [or Johnson]
Oggy
Balbuena
Sanchez
Noble
Snoddy
Yarmo
Ajeti
Anderson

Crouchie, totally agree with your statement.

Players like Zab, Sanchez, Johnson, etc need as much game time as we can give them.

Who knows when they may be called upon.

Also, I never actually think of any player as "first 11". To me they are all "first squad" and should be good enough to face Newport or Arsenal.

coming into a team as a single player replacement is rather different from a team with several changes...it just never seems to work for us.

This is 100% correct. Lets try and win a competition. Just for a change! Headbanger
