Oldest West Ham Player alive

Post by george godfrey » Mon Sep 09, 2019 9:09 am

yesterday I was privileged to meet Frank O'Farrell ,the oldest West Ham player still living, he is in the same care home in Torquay as a relation of mine who has just been admitted their, although frail now at the age of 93 he still remembered the players he played with at Upton Park at that time, as a young boy I used to watch him play for the Hammers from the terrace with my father in 1951-2-3, he played left half, and was also capped for Ireland, when I mentioned some of the players from back then his face burst into a smile, Andy Malcomb,Allison, Cantwell,Dick, Musgrove,Tucker, ect ect, he remembered them all, Frank later in his football life managed Man United, Leicester, and Torquay, we spoke for about 10-15 minutes and on leaving I gave him my best wishes and also the best wishes from all the West Ham supporters and family, on leaving him he said to me come on you irons !!!!!

a gentleman and a true hammer.

Like Malcolm Allison I remember Frank when he was a Manager , I'd have been 15 at the time when Frank managed Manchester United with another ex-West Ham player , Malcolm Musgrove as his Assistant it was only later I discovered that all three men used to play for West Ham .

My mum still claims she went out with Frank. Her twin sister says that's rubbish, he just walked her back from Mass on Sundays. They are both delighted he is still alive and well (as am I).

Great post GG, good to hear he’s being well taken care of and that he still has a soft spot for the Hammers.

There's an interesting programme called Shadow of Busby about Frank on YouTube.

Great post. Well done George and all the best to Frank.

I remember when he was manager at Man Utd. I recall a feature (might have been on Football Focus with Sam Leitch) where he was featured in a group discussion with several managers/coaches who were ex West Ham all at the same time. He was there with Dave Sexton, Malcolm Allison and John Bond and possibly Ken Brown.

He was born about 5 mins walk from where I was born and is a proud Corkman and a true gent, one of many from Cork associated with West Ham down the years. :)

Most heartwarming post I’ve seen on any forum of any kind in ages. Love the Come on you Irons at the end.

Good man George.

This is a really great post, I never reply on here, rightly or wrongly, I just observe and read. But this really caught my attention, well done GG.

I have just sat transfixed watching the documentary for the last hour, brilliant watch. Frank and his wife are clearly very honest, lovely and genuine people. Very interesting what he says about Matt Busby at the end, and I have my own views on Pat Crerand and his comments.

GG, are you allowed to share where he is? You can pm me and I’ll contact the care home to see if a short visit is allowed but I understand if not
