Would you sell Declan Rice for £90m?

Does exactly what it says on the tin - the forum for football-related discussion.

No way I would sell Rice, need to keep him and all our top players to really progress.

Simple economics of modern football suggests this will be a reality at some point. Not that we would want to sell him but, aside from the super elite, everyone's players will have their heads turned at some point and there's little you can do.

The issue is never selling anyone. The issue is proper re-investment which is where you'd hope Husillos would come into his own.

straight swap for Messi...no other deal acceptable.

Rice is the type of player that helps us push to the next level - to get top 6 it's essential to keep players like this and helps attract other players.

No I wouldn't. Our owners will trouser more than they spend if he really did go for that amount of ££££.
However, the reality is he will be sold, who to or how much for remains to be seen, so let's make the most of our crown jewel before his inevitable departure.

If he leaves it certainly won’t be to Spurs.

Couldn’t spend 90m on anyone. He's also stylistically a very similar player to Dier even if he is better. Spurs next English holding midfielder will hopefully be Oliver Skipp.

Sell him. He's not worth £90m, nor will he be. He's not world class (potentially maybe, but potential does not guarantee anything) and no one will pay £90m for a defensive midfielder when there will be cheaper alternatives on the market.

How much better than McTominay is he? Take off your C&B specs, before answering.

I am not a big fan of selling our players, but, if someone truly offers £90M, he could be adequately replaced with half that money.

I genuinely think he's a fair bit better than McTominay to be honest, who I don't think is bad but pretty average. Rice is 2 years younger as well.

Do fans of other clubs, rate Rice?

The ones I've spoken to, think he's a good player, nothing more, nothing less.

Are we over rating him, somewhat?

When we sold Rio it was the start of the break-up of a team that looked like it could go somewhere, ended in relegation a few seasons later. We bought crap with the money. No I wouldn't sell Rice, again we look like we are headed upwards, whatever that means for West Ham, so to sell our best players?

Rice will go when he and his agent wants to, when that time comes there's nothing we can do except take the highest bid. Meanwhile enjoy the fact we are putting together a decent squad and starting to play proper football.

Is Southgate overrating him? He's not a flash player, mainly gives simple passes so is not likely to be noticed by other fans much. We see him every week, not the highlights on MoTD.

Age has to come into it if you are going to talk economics

He’s got a good decade at the top - if you replace him with a 25 year old defensive mid for £45m and then in 5 years time you then need to replace that (now 30 year old) defensive mid with another 25 year old for another £45m then you’ve not benefitted at all despite the large headline number.

Will a 24 year old Declan Rice be worth less than a 20 year old - probably not much if at all. For that reason I wouldn’t sell unless he is severely rocking the boat.

If we build around him with similar quantity and get into the CL ourselves then the financial benefit of selling him will be insignificant. That probably needs new owners.

Depends on the fan. Most of my non-WHU fans agree that he looks class. A few think he's toilet.

I rate him highly, we are lucky to have him, I just wondered if we were guilty as a fan base, of overrating him, I'm in no way having a dig at Rice, was just interested to hear people's views.

Gareth continues to pick Jesse Lingard remember..

Yes, the question (in the title) says "would you sell Declan Rice for £90m?" If no one is going to offer £90m then we can't sell him for that can we?

If we buy a 25 year old replacement, then he'll be sold before we buy a new one.

And we'll have the opportunity to reduce the cost of wage twice. Declan will only earn more, each season.

I’m not sure we are over-rating him.

Three successive managers like him, Southgate rates him, Martin O’Neill apparently wanted to build the Irish team around him. Last season, our form took an upswing when he was returned to the squad. His ability on the ball is first rate, he has goals in him, and he is in his third season as a PL regular, all at the age of 20.

He is as mature and accomplished player as you can get at that age, and the fact that he is not as flash as M’Bappe doesn’t mean that he is not of insanely high quality.
