30 times in 49 years: that joke isn't funny anymore

Post by Up the Junction » Thu Sep 26, 2019 4:04 pm

That's how many times West Ham United have been knocked out of the FA Cup and various guises of the League Cup since that infamous Saturday afternoon in Blackpool back in 1971, which led Ron Greenwood to threaten to sack Bobby Moore.

Imagine if the internet and KUMB had existed in 1971.

Half of our support would be calling for Moore to be sold etc.

We need to go back to FAC Cup at Mansfield in 1969 to complete the set, 3 World Cup Winners in the team lost 3-0 to a Division 3 team

1 Bobby Ferguson
2 Billy Bonds
3 Bobby Howe
4 Martin Peters
5 Alan Stephenson
6 Bobby Moore
7 Harry Redknapp
8 Jimmy Lindsay
9 Trevor Brooking
10 Geoff Hurst
11 John Sissons
12 Ron Boyce

30 times in 49 years isn't a good record is it , we just about beat Kidderminster too if memory serves me correct with a late header from Lee Chapman .

It has to be deliberate policy of late , surely ?

I'm afraid you need to go even further back than Mansfield in 69; try Swindon,(then in Division 3) in 67 when a 3-3 draw at home in the 3rd round of the FA Cup was followed 3 days later by a 3-1 defeat in the replay. The team contained 7 of those who had won the Cup three years earlier plus Martin Peters. That was my first experience of this shameful tendency, 52 years ago.....

Beginning of the '60s we had a couple of shockers too... lost to Plymouth and Rotherham in successive seasons...

ps. Welcome to KUMB, antonyirons - I see that was your first post.

Next time we draw a lower league team away in the cup, the fans should boycott the game. If the players can't be bothered to put the effort in, why should our long suffering supporters waste their time and money. Make a statement to the club. Still pissed off after that result last night, although I was half expecting it. Having the piss taken by work colleagues this morning was not much fun I can tell you.

I've been following that policy for years! I made that trip to Blackpool in 1971, and have been emotionally scarred ever since

When we got to the 2006 FA Cup final, we started off away at a Championship team before playing 4 Premier League teams en route to the final.

We should probably be happier with harder cup draws by the looks of it.

1975 started with tough away tie at 2nd div Southampton then all top flight teams. 1980 we had to beat Everton in the semi and arsenal in the finall when it was US who were lower league

This latest debacle in the sequence of shame is that of our players being out fought by a much hungrier Oxford. Why is this? I can't see Pellers sending them out with a half arsed attitude. I think the players get the feeling from above Pellers that if they go out of the cup then "Hey-Ho" just collect your £50k that week and look forward the PL game the following week. After all every year we are in it the owners get another massive ker-ching which in turn feeds their accounts.

Luck / no luck, there is no way the team that Pellers put out loses 4-0 to Oxford United. I'm just not having it. 4 ****ing 0 ??? in one of the only 2 trophies we stand a slim chance of lifting.

FA Cup 3rd round draw can we have one where we are the underdog please? so if they aren't going to bother with the cups then at least we won't be the ****ing laughing stocks yet again.

Neathiron I duff my battered trilby to you. A boycott has to happen. Not going all out to win cup-ties is totally unacceptable and corrupt and it has to stop.

I see in France they're binning off the Coupe de la Ligue from next season in order to reduce the season schedule. I honestly think that's a great idea and the League Cup should be scrapped, not just because we almost always fall at the first or second hurdle in it - no team seems to really take it that seriously (even lower league teams are now regularly changing 4-6 players from their best elevens, if not more) until the final stages, it's increasing the risk of early season injury when players are just out of pre-season (Antonio says hello), and brings with it a series of disruptive midweek games.

Keep the FA Cup, which is regularly played on weekends anyway, and sack off this Mickey Mouse League Cup competition.

You can see the argument, "do well in the cups or stay in the premier league?".
So mid-table obscurity and no silverware it is then (as well as regular humiliating defeats)

There's a few more and the numbers get much worse.

Firstly though, the defeat at Blackpool, bad as it was, was not to a lower league side. Blackpool were bottom of the First Division when we lost to them - they got relegated that season.

I would also start this at Swindon (FA Cup) 1967 lost 3-1, and include Mansfield (0-3) 1969. But there are a few more where we lost to lower league opposition at the time:
1970 Middlesborough (FAC) 1-2
1984/85 Man City (LC) 1-2
1993/94 Notts Forest (LC) 1-2
1994/95 Bolton (LC) 1-3
2000 Tranmere (FAC) 0-1

So in 54 years, it's something like 36 exits/defeats to lower league opposition. I doubt there is a top flight club with a worse record (though Liverpool run it close - as unlikely as that sounds).

They could at least change who is in it and make the ultimate prize more attractive and make it more profitable for the lower league sides.
For a start, the top six all moan about fixture congestion, they are already in europe so take them out of it.
