Re: The January Transfer Window 2020
Thing is with the MH signings is apart from true mistakes (Sanchez, Roberto and, given his injuries, Wilshere) none have been great this season.
Diop was excellent last season but this, well £20m looks not far off right as his inability to head a ball and questionable positional sense is becoming more and more worrying. Again Balbuena looked a bargain last season but has gone to pot defensively this. By far our best CH this year is Oggy.
Fornals looks a player but arguably his best position is that where both Lanzini and Anderson (and arguably Haller) are most comfortable, behind the main striker.
Anderson’s drop off in output is a major cause of our struggles but how much is down to him and how much to the way MP set the team up this year?
We were going to have a limited budget, proper squad management would be spend that on the CM required or if you want Fornals then sell someone like Lanzini to fund the CM. Too many of our expensive (and probably better players) are in the same position. It means either square pegs in round holes or expensive players on the bench when poorer players are in the team.
We knew we were losing Arnie but unless you are going to change half a team Haller is no replacement as his game and Arnie’s are chalk and cheese. I actually like Haller but the role he is being asked to play is just not him. He needs players going beyond him but nearly everyone around him wants to come back to the ball. It is why Antonio is so important his willingness to run beyond gives Haller the partner/target required.
This window, if anyone comes, it is a band aid to see if we can survive. If we do hopefully the summer will see players purchased who play a system the manager wants. I thought we were getting that when the MP/MH regime was put in place but for the last 12 calendar months we have looked disjointed.

Re: The January Transfer Window 2020
Regardless of how much the Chairman tells his friendly press contacts "he" has spent, it's irrelevent.
We sit outside of the drop zone on GD.
We have to play Liverpool on Wednesday night, and face Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.
Eevn if a player was signed by Weds morning is he likely to start in either of those two games ? How much training time will he have had with his new team mates or manager ?
Which means we are effectively signing players for the last 13 games of the season, including fixtures against Liverpool, City, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham away.
So, in reality 8 matches to make a difference.I reckon we may need 6 wins from those games.
Huge gamble.

There is that and any pace added to our team will be a help. He looks very lightweight however.

He has a point about the fans. Their dark mood does affect the players. But nowhere near as much as the players lack of consistent effort over the last 4 years has affected the fans mood.Up the Junction wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 4:09 pm
And following on, he also suggests supporters were to blame for the Albion defeat - apparently "there were signs last weekend that the fans’ increasingly dark mood was affecting the players". I'd love to hear him justify that one.
Disappointed with Ken. He's far better than that.
We sold our home and now we basically play 38 away games a year. Of course we're going to struggle.

Nah. This is the late paper. Possibly just revised for the website though, of course.Albie Beck wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 4:56 pm Maybe the early print versions went out with that and following "guidance" from WHU's press office he revised the later and on-line versions? Credible theory?

Re: The January Transfer Window 2020
A big problem we have is there's very little "on the beach factor" in the run-in, of the sort which helped us out of a jam the last time Moyes was here. It's entirely populated with clubs who are on course to be in a relegation battle or fighting for Europe, when what we really need are juicy fixtures against the likes of Everton or Southampton.the pink palermo wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 5:02 pm

Re: The January Transfer Window 2020
Value for money these days is very hard to define, especially for strikers. The market is just crazy. Newcastle bought Joelinton for around the same as we allegedly paid for Haller, and he's managed 2 goals in 27 outings for them.Aceface wrote: ↑Mon Jan 27, 2020 4:34 pm Yeah, the two big ones – Haller and Anderson – ultimately have to be judged on a value for money basis. But decoupled from the financial aspect they're both decent players. Haller is flailing around mightily right now but having a striker sitting on 6 goals in January makes him probably the most deadly marksman signed under Sullivan's ownership.

Re: The January Transfer Window 2020
Our biggest window for a long, long time, seeing as we have a threadbare squad with very little quality, lots of injuries and a horrendous set of fixtures, all while hovering just above the relegation zone.
We needed numbers. We needed pace, power and fight. We needed those players in early.
The owners have completely f*cked it, as per.

Re: The January Transfer Window 2020
Of the stellar players of yesteryear with whom we had tenuos links, none were more fanciful than Pele himself after the 1970 World Cup. I once read, Bobby Moore pleaded with Greenwood to sign him and felt he could come. Ron, however told him, he was going to sign a star player from the tournament and moved heaven and earth for Israeli international, Mordechai Speigler. This was at a time, when it was not possible to sign players from outside the British Isles. Ron even tried to get him on amateur terms, but that too proved impossible. He was actually, a very classy midfield player and definitely a West Ham 'type' player who would've fitted in brilliantly, so I could see Ron Greenwood's thinking

Re: The January Transfer Window 2020
they will make at least 2 signings - who i don't know, but they will. even if it is just to keep the fans onside.
there is no way they won't sign anyone else. once 2 have been signed then the pressure will be off them for a little while.

Twitter reckons it’s a €4m loan fee with an obligation for a €16m fee if we stay up.
