8th april 1986 under the lights v southampton. Dev was magic, mac was chasing everything, could have been 5-0 but ended up 1-0. A net busting volley into the southbank by Alvin. A few beers, get home into bed, an hour later the wife goes into labour. 7 the next morning out pops a boy who i immediatley call Alvin. 33 years later sat together today watching the game. Today was special. Today Karren Brady was irrelevant. Today it was our club. Today was about family and the west ham family and David wasnt the only one with a tear in his eye at the end.

It meant something to him today, really meant something, same how it would mean to us. I’m chuffed for him and for us, shows what a bit of pride in the shirt can do for a teams performance. Well done to him, nobes, Cresswell, Snoddy and Antonio for driving us on.

That is fantastic. Why it’s still worthwhile.

I saw Alvin play in our youth team and went to Wrexham for his debut, which went badly wrong. How lovely that these stories go full circle.

Just for you mate:

If only a time tunnel existed to take us back to those days even for a day. Any footage of the old place and around that particular time, just stirs incredible, lifetime memories.

David Martin's tears & hug with Alvin is right up there with Adrian's gloves off in cementing himself as a West Ham cult hero, for me at least.

Geezer is proper West Ham and thats good enough for me, especially as 2nd choice.

Seen those images of David Martin , on his knees after the game, the other players coming to congratulate him , the hug with dad in the stands , even his short interview about 6/ 7 times and i get emotional still.
I guess that sums this club up when we get it together it is so uplifting , last game at the Boylen , a 33 year old 3rd choice son of a West ham legend keeps a clean sheet in an away win against the rent boys in the first time in 17 years .

What a story and days like yesterday are why we support West Ham. We have many lows but the highs are sweet, and when there is the emotion of a club legends son making his debut in goal and keeping a clean sheet at a rival, it can’t get much sweeter.

He clearly gave so much confidence to the rest of the team who subsequently looked organised and not worried that the keeper might or might not come, or might or might not catch it. He was barking out orders to experienced players at set pieces - including the captain.

The crowd chanting 'There's only one David Martin' at the end. What a moment for him and his Dad.

I love this club.

This is literally what it's all about isn't it?

The scenes after the final whistle yesterday got to me and it appears that I've got something in my eyes today looking at the pictures of father and son too

I wasn't there yesterday but on MOTD you could hear them singing that after his first save! Fantastic support getting behind Alvin's lad.
Like many on here I had a lump in my throat watching David Martin falling to his knees after the final whistle, then being mobbed by his teammates and finally that hug from Alvin.
****ing brilliant, and that was West Ham in a nutshell. Let's hope this result and performance can kick start our season.
