Depressing Question

Post by Turns to Stone » Tue Dec 10, 2019 3:27 pm

When was the last time a player left West Ham to go to a better team because they had earned a move?

I was discussing with a mate last night about players like Wan-Bissaka and Sadio Mane performing so well, that they were signed for big money by a bigger club. And I was trying to figure out when the last time that happened at West Ham. When the last time, one of our players performed so well that they were actually bought by a bigger club?

And why aren't they? Why don't any of our players dream of playing the Champions League and work hard enough to try and make it happen.

It's like they arrive, and just ****ing stagnate.

Aside from when we got relegated, who was the last player to get 'snapped up'?

Players don't seem to improve with us, so it's difficult to think of the players that earned their move to a better club.

It's clear as day that Rice will be the next one though.

Bellamy maybe? If you consider Man City at that time as a "better" club (I think they had just received the UAE money)

Scott Parker was probably the last to step up.

Haven't you heard we're a BIG club now we've moved to the LS and don't have to sell our best player anymore.

Parker is probably the answer.

Could make a case for Payet depending how you see our standing vs. Marseilles though that had some personal elements obviously

Hernandez is at multi-Europa League winners Sevilla, although he probably earned it through past glories rather than when with us

The current players we have should be putting themselves in the shop window via their performances. Haller and Anderson are the 2 in particular who although we spent a lot of money on them, they have the potential to pay for a champions league team, increase their wages considerably and net West Ham a tidy profit. Their performances are so abject that I suspect we have already paid them too much and the desire to go to the next step is no longer there.

Not quite answering your questions, but these players have left over recent years to play for big teams (I'll let others argue if they are bigger then us)

Adrian, Payet, Demba Ba (Chelsea, via Newcastle), Ravel Morrison (Lazio, played 7 games)

Simone Zaza went to Valencia after he left us & Carlton Cole won the SPL with Celtic

Ok, some of this is really pushing the boat....

You're not having Morrison, Adrian or Cole. As all of those were released by us. Payet and Demba Ba are two that did achieve and gain moves.

Not including home grown/academy players or players that sulked/went on strike.
Julian Dicks & Frank McAvenie.

The first that spring to mind for me are:- Rio, Lampard, Joe Cole, Glen Johnson and Carrick.

Mind you, that was an exceptional era for us.
