Wow. What a very well written and fascinating piece.

Like one of the commenters below, I would consider myself a 'massive liberal snowflake' but the treatment of Madley here seems to have been way over the top and unreasonable. Especially when I am sure that all of us can think of far more extreme examples where less or no action has been taken.

Strikes me as a case of the authorities taking overly heavy handed action in a case where it's easy to, in order to shelter themselves from criticism when they fail to act in more difficult situations.

I'm sure a lot of people will cry "political correctness gone mad". It's not, it's an ar*******le throwing their weight around to prove who's in charge. This is a misdemeanour at best, but some people love to throw their weight around. I hope the grass who dropped him in it is proud of himself. If he'd posted this for public viewing it would be different, but a private message between two people.? How gutless is this mystery colleague

This is a sign of the times, discrimination of any sort is not acceptable. Things people were openly joking about 20 years ago are now looked at completely differently. Things you say are now open to different interpretations and could cause offence to many. I feel that the sacking was correct as a man in positions such as his do have to have a moral stance. If it was part of a private conversation no would have ever known but to post a video to a friend in this day and age is virtual suicide. He has learnt a lesson for which he could now be stigmatised and labelled something which maybe he isn’t but mud sticks. WARNING BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU PUT ONLINE OR WHAT YOU SEND TO OTHERS

Sounds like he was treated ridiculously harshly.

Was he not in a trade union - the PFA (not that he is a player obviously) have defended some of their members who have done far, far worse than that.

It says in the piece he went in with his union rep.

I agree, it is ridiculous, and as someone who has fallen victim myself (for want of a better phrase) of a dirty little snitch showing management a message I sent in what I thought was a private conversation costing me a 40k a year job, I do feel for him.

Speaking as someone who runs companies in Europe and US you have to be so careful what’s your what’s app and to who. Feel for him

Sounds like they wanted rid of an overweight ref so used dubious means. His union let him down big time.

Who? Was my first thought.
Meh. The second.

If he'd been a bit less rubbish the outcome may have been less severe.

Did any of his accusers say how he actually discriminated against anybody?

It’s the discriminatory way he says. But comparing your running skills as a professional referee to those of someone who maybe less fortunate due to disability and then putting it on to snapchat is foolhardy at the least. Imagine standing next to the bloke when he made that so called joke on sports day, it’s one thing thinking you’re a little bit overweight it’s another if you’re suffering in pain day in day out and unable to do the everyday things. What’s he going to joke about when he sees a kid in a wheelchair trying to compete in next years sports day. The last leg are going to have a field day

Bloke was pretty useless (remember the Bournemouth equaliser?) but this seems very harsh.

If a PL footballer had did something similar he'd get a 5k fine and that would be the end of it.

A classic case of admitting to something bad so the truth is forgotten imo.

He’s certainly had a ruff time of it but people must have been barking mad to have believed the dog bumming stuff

After reading this

"I sent it as a private text to somebody who I trusted, somebody who had been a huge part of my life for the previous 10 years and who I was on reasonable terms with."

Who else thought
