Sheffield away: travel and safety

Post by Up the Junction » Fri Jan 03, 2020 6:27 pm

Have been on a conference call with SYP and Sheffield Utd tonight.

It appears the last train leaving Sheffield for London next Friday (10 January) departs at 8:59pm - which isn't going to be of much use to our travelling fans, given that the match is an 8pm kick off...

I'm sure most of you are already aware of this, but no doubt there will one or two who aren't and will be planning to travel by rail.

I'm told the Easy Hotel has already received numerous bookings from Hammers fans seeking to stay in the city overnight. FWIW the first train for London the following morning leaves Sheffield at 6:27am (after which there will be one every hour).

SUFC and SYP are producing a leaflet for travelling fans advising which pubs to use, parking venues etc - I should have a copy of that early next week, if anyone's interested.

SYP are concerned about the possibilities of issues between the two sets of fans in the city centre after the game - the match has been placed in the 'high risk' category - and the implication was that Hammers fans may be better served by travelling home on the Friday night if possible.

If anyone has any questions re policing etc I will happily pass them on.

If it’s considered that West Ham fans shouldn’t stay over the police should not have allowed TV to change it to an evening kick off.

With no trains back we’re staying over whatever the police advise.

Unbelievable.
SYP allow the game to be moved to Friday night then one week before the fixture they advise our fans to travel straight home after the game.

Is Duckenfield in charge of match day planning and safety?

I’ll be driving up on the Friday and straight back after as I can’t say I fancy an overnight stay in Sheffield regardless of anything else going on though

Feel for those that have already paid for tickets and what not though prior to this coming to light!

I seem to recall our lot getting kettled upon leaving the station either on our last trip there or the one before it. SYP not that friendly I'm afraid.

Unbelievable. Will Jacob bring this up in the press or the Moose mention it?

No I thought not.

BUY. They won’t buy credit... that would cost them.

It should be handed to them on a silver plate.

Isn’t that smack bang next to the ground?

There’s a Mecure not far from the town hall and for those who fancy something a bit more boutique I can recommend The Leopold.

shame they don't do the footy special trains anymore. There really is no thought for the fans these days. If its an 8pm KO then a train back should be laid on.
police have little power where money is concerned !

gold and Sullivan lay on free transport are tyou still hungover ! there is no money in it for them so sod the fans !

They have enough problems getting scheduled trains to run and to be fair to them i remember back in the 70’s on a footy special or two and the aftermath was not pleasant. :(
