sunday's news gossip 21st july includes west ham
27 day's to go
Outrage: West Ham players Winston Reid (left) and Guy Demel dispute a penalty on a frustrating day at Mainz
Leading the comeback: Joe Cole scored to make it 2-1, but could not convert a chance to level soon after
All-smiles: Carroll watches on from the bench but was not in the match squad for the friendly
Loss: It was a glum day for Allardyce, whose side take on Hamburg next week
Mainz 4 West Ham 1: Hammers succumb to heavy defeat against Bundesliga side
West Ham suffered their first loss of their pre-season programme, after being soundly beaten by German side Mainz at the Stadion am Bruchweg.
The Hammers trailed 2-0 at half-time through goals from Dani Schahin and Nicolai Muller and, although Joe Cole volleyed the visitors back into contention at the start of the second period, Shawn Parker re-established the Bundesliga side's two-goal cushion by converting a controversial 74th-minute penalty.
Sebastian Polter sealed matters four minutes later, and Sam Allardyce's men will be trying to bounce back when they face another Bundesliga side, Hamburger SV in their next friendly.
The Hammers had won all four of their previous pre-season games prior to their visit to Mainz, but were under the cosh straight from kick-off, as Dani Schahin took advantage of poor West Ham defending to slot in from a cross after nine minutes.
Mainz doubled their advantage midway through the first half, after Winston Reid backed off Nicolai Mueller, and the instrumental winger drove home past Jussi Jaaskelainen into the bottom corner.
Things could have got even worse for West Ham - who included American Sebastian Lletget in their strong starting line-up - before half time, but Niki Zimling hit the post from a free-kick for the home side.
Undoubtedly having received harsh words from Allardyce, the Premier League side set about closing the gap with increased pressure after half time, and reduced the deficit to 2-1 straight away with a goal from Joe Cole.
Leading the comeback: Joe Cole scored to make it 2-1, but could not convert a chance to level soon after
The England midfielder latched on to a Ricardo Vaz Te knock-down and swept home to spark chance after chance for the away team.
Modibo Maiga - who started in place of summer signing Andy Carroll who was not in the match squad - went close, as did Cole in his quest to double his tally.
Things soon turned sour for West Ham, as they were made to rue their missed chances. Shawn Parker struck home from the spot - after a hotly debated penalty was given - for Mainz to all but end the competitiveness of the contest, and just four minutes later Sebastian Polter volleyed home from close range.
All-smiles: Carroll watches on from the bench but was not in the match squad for the friendly

It was a deserved victory for the home side in the end, and Allardyce will be looking to add to his squad before the new season starts.
The Hammers kick off their league campaign with a game at home to new-boys Cardiff, and have been linked with midfielder Oscar Trejo, and another striker this summer.
Got a Kalou? West Ham are keen on a cut-price deal for the Ivorian
West Ham line up former Chelsea forward Salomon Kalou as Zapata move falters
West Ham United are lining up a £2.5million bid for Salomon Kalou,
The Hammers want to get him back to the Premier League from French side Lille as Sam Allardyce bulks up his front options.
Striker Andy Carroll is ruled out of the start of the season and Colombian Duvan Zapata failed in his bid for a work permit.
It has led Allardyce to consider new targets - and 27-year-old former Chelsea star Kalou has emerged as a man he would love to sign.
West Ham have discovered he has a buy-out clause in his contract so will now step up their interest.
Les Dogues will be reluctant to lose any more attacking talent, with new signing Florin Thauvin already angling for a move away from Le Grand Stade Metropole.
