International class: Varela has represented his country at the highest level

West Ham widen search for extra firepower with interest in Porto striker Varela

West Ham are showing interest in Porto striker Silvestre Varela.

The Hammers have made no secret of their desire to bring in another front man and Varela fits the bill. The 28-year-old Portugal international can also play right wing and is valued at £6.5million.

Varela has netted 25 goals in 90 games for Porto since joining the club in 2009. He has 19 caps for his country and scored against Denmark at Euro 2012.

The club recekntly completed the permanent signing of Andy Carroll for a club-record fee, but they still want another striker, according to co-owner David Sullivan.

'We need goal scorers not defenders,' he said.

West Ham players pose in front of the Olympic Stadium - their soon-to-be home

West Ham are on the way up says John Moncur

FORMER West Ham star John Moncur believes the Olympic Stadium move and current signings are putting the club on the cusp of the Premier League’s elite.

The Hammers' move to Stratford, supported by the London Legacy SDHpDevelopment Corporation, was SDHpconfirmed earlier this year after a rocky three-year bidding process.

And Moncur, who played for the club for nine years, is confident they are heading in the right direction.

“It is a clear message that we want to grow with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham and join the elite set of clubs,” he said.

“West Ham are moving forward and this is a major step, to get a stadium that is probably going to be the best in the country.

“It is a clear message that we want to grow with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham and join the elite set of clubs”
John Moncur, former West Ham player

“With the signings that we are making to add to the stadium, I think it is all SDHpfantastic for the club.”

West Ham will leave SDHpUpton Park and take up their tenancy at the restructured 54,000-seater stadium in time for the start of the 2016-17 season.

And the signing of England star Andy Carroll from SDHpLiverpool for a club record £15.5m has delighted the former midfielder.

Moncur added: “Andy Carroll is a massive signing for us and sends a clear message out to everyone that we want to get in the top half of the league again this year.SDRq

At least three on Allardyce wish-list West Ham United, Last updated:
West Ham are planning a swoop for Wigan playmaker Shaun Maloney, while QPR's Loic Remy and Spurs' Scott Parker remain targets. At least three on Allardyce wish-list Wigan's Scotland international Maloney is keen to stay in the Premier League following his side's relegation last term and has been linked with a move to the Hammers in order to achieve that objective. Several other top-flight clubs are also keen on the former Aston Villa and Celtic man, including Everton who are now managed by old Wigan boss Roberto Martinez. That could mean the Blues are favourites to land him but Hammers boss Sam Allardyce remains interested amid talk of a bid in the region of £5million. QPR's former Marseille marksman Remy is also an option as he is tipped to leave Loftus Road, while the Hammers are also being linked with Benfica forward Nelson Oliviera, who is also wanted by Stoke and Cardiff. Parker, meanwhile, could be heading back to his old club after co-chairman David Sullivan said on Twitter over the weekend that he would like to re-sign the midfielder. Spurs are thought to be open to the idea of letting the England international, 32, leave White Hart Lane but would want at least £4.5million for him.

Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett is casting his eye over former West Ham man Zavon Hines.

The 24-year-old was released by Bradford City at the end of last season having scored two league goals in 32 games.

Hines was tipped for big things at Upton Park having won the 2009-10 Young Hammer of the Year award but was sold along with Junior Stanislas to Championship side Burnley, though the move failed to bring the best out of the former England under-21 international.

He was subsequently released by Burnley at the end of the 2011-12 season and earned a one-year deal with Bradford. but after scoring just twice for the Bantams, was released with manager Phil Parkinson saying he needed to be somewhere he would play more regularly.

And he has now turned up at Victoria Road, with Daggers boss Burnett keen on the winger after his second half showing against Crystal Palace on Saturday, with another outing expected tomorrow when Daggers host Charlton Athletic.

“I though Hines as a trialist came in and did very well,” said Burnett.

“We have got one or two players who we feel are key for us to sign. I have to make the right decision and I have to make sure they are the right ones as we only get one crack at this.”

“Against Charlton it will be what you saw today against Palace. People got run outs and the people that started did very well and I thought the ones that came on did very well, the likes of Brian Woodall and Sean Shields.”

If it's 4.5 million on a two year contract, including wages, then it's worth while. If it's 4.5 million before wages, it will end up being double that.

"It's a boy! It's a boy!" hollered Sky News's Kay Burley either auditioning for a part in Tommy or the role of town crier, lacking only a bell, mutton chop whiskers, Pickwickian costume and the introductory catchphrase "oyez, oyez". Taking her lead from her colleagues over on Sky Sports News, she then proceeded to collar passers-by and ask them their reaction, only to be greeted by a stream of "I knows" and "sorry I'm from Spains". Meanwhile 487 million "people" took to Twitter in the race to scoop each other with the breaking news "Woman has baby", while vast numbers of people professed disinterest but rubber-necked anyway, passing comment, looking as contemptuous as Brian Sewell's sewer-sniffer face, having their cake and eating it.

And with all the supplements in this morning's newspapers, the betting odds for the third-in-line to the throne's name and pictures of easels, there's little room for summer transfer fluff. Knowing the second-in-line to the throne is such an ardent Villa fan, the Mill has had a modest wager that young prinny will end up with the moniker: "Jimmy (Nigel) Kenny Gary Allan Kenneth Dennis Desmond Gary Peter Gordon Tony Windsor". If you lump on now and it comes in, no need to thank us. One Holte End legend who does not stand a chance of being commemorated is Darren Bent, given the bum's rush by Paul Lambert and now telling a fan that he's off either to Fulham or Newcastle.

Arsenal persist in doing their impression of a 1950s ballroom wallflower, trying to look tough by chewing gum, affecting a swagger, and with a ridiculous snarl plastered over its face, trying to camouflage that it is as nervous as a kitten when it comes to asking someone to dance. Better to go home alone than compromise your standards, eh Arsène? But what's this? A £40m bid for Liverpool's Luis Suárez? Really? A £30m offer for Benfica's Salvio? The same for Manchester United's Wayne Rooney and £21m for Atlético Mineiro's Bernard? You can put these down to the sun, rather than the Sun.

The Mill only hopes that if the last of these somehow comes off, it will be agreed that the Brazil winger shall be pronounced in the English style like Bernard Cribbins rather than adopting the swanky second syllable stress of a frankly deluded rest of the world.

Monday's Evening Standard believed that Tottenham had lost out on Valencia's Roberto Soldado because they were £10m short of the £25m asking price. But Franco Baldini, the Spurs technical director, has not given up and, under strict instructions from Daniel Levy is continuing negotiations thus: "£15,000,001?"

"No."

"£15,000,002?"

"No."

"£15,000,003?"

"No."

"£15,000,004?"

Expect hardball Tottenham to get their man at 11.59pm on transfer deadline day. Or not. Baldini is making things interesting by simultaneously conducting another round of bargaining, this one for Lyon's Lisandro López. Expect hardball Tottenham to get their man at 11.59pm on transfer deadline day. Or, indeed, not.

Liverpool, who had thought to be interested in Soldado as a cunning plan should Suárez do one, are in Valencia too, but negotiating a one-season loan for the France left-back Aly Cissokho, who would cost them a fee of £850,000 for a borrow. In other striking news, Fabio "arguably the best physical player I've worked with in terms of his pace, power and fitness" Borini is being eyed up by Lazio, also for a season-long loan.

And finally, long-standing friend of Joey Barton, the former Wolves captain Karl Henry, is expected to sign for QPR for £1m. Given that Barton once called "Kelvin Henry" a Sunday league player who "should keep his trap firmly shut" while "Kelvin" called Barton "embarrassing", it seems clear that Harry Redknapp is demonstrating extreme dedication to the cause of persuading Barton to stay at Loftus Road. Clever old Aitch.
