Re: England Cricket Summer 2019 ODI World Cup and Ashes
Entering the 'what if' zone now, really need to grab another. Been a good afternoon though, some top cricket from both sides.
As an aside, I wish Root would/could work on his bowling, he clearly has real talent.

All over rather quickly in the end. Overall we got out played and grabbed a 2-2 draw. Shame they kept the Ashes.
Good summer of cricket over all.
Smith still looks like he should be a character in the Muppets.

Great summer of cricket, but overall, I reckon that was about the right result. Both sides as good and as bad as each other in equal measures

Good performance all round this test. Disappointing that Australia retain the Ashes but with the world's best batsman and bowler living up to their reputations it was probably the right result.
A World cup win and a drawn Ashes series....not the worst summer ever to be honest.

Re: England Cricket Summer 2019 ODI World Cup and Ashes
Have to say, a somewhat bitter-sweet victory in the end... but a victory all the same.
Not losing this series despite not getting the urn back = About as good as we could have expected given how we have performed at times
It's been a great series for the neutral... after a sterling World Cup. Despite the series result not being what we wanted, it's been an amazing summer of cricket.
Smith was really the difference. I do wonder how it could have been different with Anderson.
A a side, we scraped through despite the selections of Smith and Taylor, not because of them. Sibley and Pope can count themselves unlucky, like Burns a year ago... Time to look to the next Ashes, not the next series. Sibley, Crawley, Pope, Parkinson, J Overton, Stone, S Curran all to be in and around the squad if fit.

There's a few tough decisions to be made for sure. Bairstow did well with the gloves today but does it warrant him staying in a side with Buttler when his average in the last 2 or so years hasn't been up to it?

Farewell to Beefy and Gower on Sky. Beefy clearly a bit jaded but you can tell Gower is gutted.

Re: England Cricket Summer 2019 ODI World Cup and Ashes
Shame next summer's cricket is nothing to get too excited about. West Indies and Pakistan being the tourists. Many years ago, when players like Viv Richards, Joel Garner, Deryk Murray, Chandapaul, Desmond Haynes, Roy Fredericks, Charlie Griffiths and Wes Hall were around they were brilliant value, but sadly, test cricket then went on the wane as kids in the Caribbean took up more money spinning sports such as baseball, basketball and Grid Iron football and it has never fully recovered. Great shame, but understandable nonetheless. This time around, West Indies will probably have a young, emerging team, but I fully expect us to win that series, 3-0. Windies haven't won a series abroad in God knows how many years, but Pakistan, who also tour, always have a good couple of quicks and a very decent spinner, will offer stiffer resistance and could conceivably win one of the three tests

I'm not sure Botham has added very much insight in recent years, Gower though did his job well, very professionally.
Who's coming in for them ?

Isha Guha is apparently going to get more to do.
You can't have the likes of Bob Key with his dozen or so tests offering insight into where the batsman are going wrong.....

I was shocked and disappointed to hear they are both leaving. Whoever replaces them are unlikely to be as good at the job as either of those two.the pink palermo wrote: ↑Sun Sep 15, 2019 7:58 pm I'm not sure Botham has added very much insight in recent years, Gower though did his job well, very professionally.

Re: England Cricket Summer 2019 ODI World Cup and Ashes
So let me see if I’ve got this right, you drew with NZ which wins you the World Cup, and you draw with the Aussies and therefore lose the Ashes. That right?

Ian Ward in for Gower. Good presenter in his own right. Isa Ghua for Beef. I've no problem with that.

Ian Ward?
What's the logic behind that? Crazy decision really.

Re: England Cricket Summer 2019 ODI World Cup and Ashes
Can't stand Ian Ward. A really annoying bloke, I'm not sure what it is, he just does my head in. It seems to be his style, is he too pointed? A bit shouty? I don't know, but there's an illogical hatred there.
Anyway, onto the cricket. Yes a draw was probably a fair result for the series. They've been slightly better than us for the most part, but I think their batting overall has been worse. Steve Smith, and then Lambuschagne has masked their frailties.
That said, we have done ourselves no favours at all, and big questions need to be asked of the selectors here:
1. The Jason Roy experiment. It was always a gamble putting him in test cricket, we all knew it, but then to have him open made it more of a gamble. It clearly wasn't working after the first test and the second, but we carried on until after the third before moving him to 4. His batting issues affected his whole game and his fielding suffered. We've knocked his confidence massively here. He should have been at 5 or 6.
2. Playing a semi fit 37 year old James Anderson cost us that test. You could see it in their second innings, our bowlers looked knackered.
3. Why no Sam Curran? He smashed India last summer and got man of the series, yet we wait until the last test to give him a go, and despite it being known that Smith isn't quite so good vs left arm fasts. Woakes has looked average, yet when we drop him it was for Overton. Why?
4. Moeen Ali first test. He was dropped from the ODI team because he was clearly ****ed, so why put him in the test team? Again, this cost us the Egbaston test.
5. The gloves. It's Buttler in ODIs, but it's Bairstow in tests. Why? In truth neither are especially brilliant as WK, and at the moment neither are looking especially great with the bat, although Buttler has looked a bit better since moving down to 7 - you have to question the logic though, why do we have a specialist batsman that can only bat at 7? Who has Foakes offended in the England set up? Bairstow is doubly annoying because he growls all the time, and seems to use up a review every time he gets an LBW.
It's a little irritating looking back on it, as there's lots of silly things we got wrong there that cost us the series. Australia were very good with the ball, so you can forgive a few of the lower scores, but with the bat they were poor on the whole, not brilliant in the field and Tim Paines use of DRS was shocking, not to mention his calls for the toss. Weakest captain they've had in a while - how long before they pass it back to Smith I wonder?

Re: England Cricket Summer 2019 ODI World Cup and Ashes
Botham & Gower have gone!!! Did not know this and proper gutted at the news, loved both, particularly Gower.
As others have said, great summer of cricket, I stand by I think the Aussies were "slightly" better than us, but both teams played some excellent & crap cricket over the 5 tests. Really enjoyed it, and getting to see it live a few times was a real treat.
Loved the Wade/Archer contest, fair play to Wade for coming out on top even if does have a huge bruise this morning
Archer on the Aussie wickets will be a great watch!
