England Cricket: tour of South Africa

Post by smuts »

Hopefully Jofra Archer can regain some of his early Ashes form in SA. No one expects him to bowl at 95mph every over but he was massively off the pace in NZ.

Anderson, Bairstow and a not fit yet Mark Wood called up for SA.

England win toss and bowl. Both sides seem happy with that. The pitch traditionally deteriorates, we need a first innings lead. Jimmy back for Test 150, no spinner again (which I don’t like)

I think the attack’s looking quite good, we have different options now. Jimmy’s back and Curran is a handy little bowler who can pick up important wickets. Plus the pace of Archer.

Now I’ve said this iwatch the Saffers go on and make 500.

EDIT - just seen no spinner in the team. :?

With Broad and Archer having the flu not so long ago, I would have given them more time to rest it out and would have batted first, especially in 32 degrees heat.

Oh well. We'll find out later today if it was the right decision.

Already looking a strange decision to bowl first, England only 2 lucky wickets.

Plus golden boy Johnny B back in the side instead of Crawley. Root must like a bit of ginger I reckon.

Archer bowling ***** again, going for over 5 an over, his 1st up after lunch was criminal. I wonder if he is ready for all this, maybe he'd have been better served playing for an Aussie state team this winter learning about the conditions and the different ball.

SA 284 all out, looks a good score on this track to me.

Burns survives first ball. Review over turns decision.

15-2. Burns got a very good one however I'm afraid Sibley has done nothing to convince me he can make the step up. Bowling first on this is looking increasingly more insane. Variable bounce already for SA.

Someone needs to bat out of their skin to make England’s plan work.

150-5. Bairstow clean bowled again for 1.

Absolutely farcical that he keeps getting recalled.

Stokes gone, can’t see us getting this now unless Curran digs in, he has done before and got us back in it, Buttler is capable as well. Lose one of these now though and it’s going to be a tall order.

It is so annoying, we had just started to look in control and then bam! 142-3 becomes 150-6. So many times. Even more annoying it wasn't the two opening bowler which magic stuff that did it, it was the relatively benign second string. We'll be chasing 300+ in the 4th innings and I reckon we'll lose by 150 odd (unless Stokes does something yet again)

This england cricket team is something else. On a par with West Ham.

Bairstow comes straight back in the side at the expense of Crawley who hasn't really had a go. Meanwhile, some players get endless lives after they fail, fail and fail again (roy).

What happened about building towards the next ashes? They refuse to give any spinner they pick a try - what is the point of bringing them on the tour!

Looks like another Test defeat on the cards, not sure how many in this series but if we lose another series I think Root should step down as captain. His record is poor.

I’m also dubious about the new head coach. All looking a bit Peter Moores-esque if you ask me.

Root is a terrible captain although a lot of the issues with our side are beyond our control. A lot of the uncertainty is of our own making though.

I'll be amazed if Giles/Silverwood are a success. They are a massively uninspiring duo.

103 behind on 1st innings after putting a team in. Shocking. I’ve said before, Root is not a captain. However the opening bowlers set the tone yesterday, neither had any fire and were just passive. The first dangerous over was Curran’s. Today all that effort to get to 140-3 thrown away.

Anderson strikes early doors.

Our batting though is woeful. Is Jos Buttler really worth his place with the gloves over Foakes? Hardly ever delivers with the bat at test level.

Write this test off already. Root and Buttler have gone down with the Flu sweeping the camp.

Test has gone from bad to worse since Root decided to let them bat first.
