steveyrockstar wrote:I get that Fonte is a good player and improves us in the immediacy, but it strikes me as a very strange, short-term transfer and would be very frustrating if that £8m impacts our transfer budget in the summer.
Fonte gives us a 4th centre back, which improves the squad certainly.

The argument people are making about how he performed at Southampton does not necessarily read across.

He has a 6'7" keeper behind him, some fast and very highly rated specialist full backs, a couple of very capable, specialist defensive midfielders (Schneiderlin, Wanyama, Romeu) etc etc.

To perform identically, it's reasonable to assume that he will need pretty much the same rather than some of our far cheaper and makeshift options.

£5m loan fee on each.
One loan per club.

I sympathise on Oxlade Chamberlain though. Think he is versatile, pacey, skilful and could do well for us.

With Fonte I doubt our transfer fee for him is a straight 8-10 million... especially knowing how our board work...

Fonte put in a TR after scum wouldn't agree a longer deal with him so it's more likely we have based our transfer fee in add ons based on him seeing out his contract with us.. as scum wouldn't take the risk up front and keep paying him the 75k odd a week... we likely have matched that whilst spreading our risk over his contract term...

I am sure what ever deal has actually been agreed we have mitigated our risk to the most part...

Regardless I honestly think he brings more to the team and squad than just his playing prowess... he is a strong character and demands commitment from those around him and I'm sure will also bring a much needed balance not only on the pitch but also in the dressing room and on the training pitch...

I look forward to seeing him play in C & B and his impact overall on the team/squad... :)

That isn't to be deliberately blunt and to mug the thread off, but I'm really stumped at what else there is to say?
Why post anything then?

Great post Jackhammer. Doesn't fill me with hope for the future of the human race.

Health and safety has undone all the good work evolution and Darwin theory took a couple of millenia to do in just 40 years.

thejackhammer wrote: Also, Alex Pritchard is allegedly set to sign for Burnley for £8m. That'll make £16m spent on him in six months including his move last summer. Not bad considering he's in and out of the Norwich team, never made it at Spurs, and barely kicked a ball in the Premier League.
How does this keep happening? Spurs produce a never ending line of poor to average youth players that keep moving for hugely (huuuuuuuuuuuugely) inflated fees. Dawson, O'Hara, Huddlestone, Livermore, Pritchard. How? How do Spurs get these players so overhyped in the first place, and how is the value maintained afterwards? We need to be doing this.

Colours never run wrote:How comes Payet is not part of the transfer window discussion? I don't understand how it's off topic. It's the biggest story this window.
Because the player has his own thread and people ramble off discussing his effort etc. I asked for Payet comments to go on the Payet thread, relevant transfer news can go on this thread.

Well, to be fair, they produce players who get in their team to start with and then move them on at the usual premium for young, British, PL players.

Dawson didn't come through their youth team. He played 80+ games for Forest and joined them when he was 22.

O'Hara played 34 games for them, Huddlestone played 144, Livermore played 36.

Pritchard is the odd one out, but he did have a fantastic season at Brentford when they made the play-offs and would have been signed off the back of that.

It seems that relevant, or rather actual transfer news just gets ignored anyway! Either that or I'm blocked by most on here :D

Huddlestone played 90 odd games for Derby before signing for Sp*rs

Indeed. British premium is pretty much the sum of it and it's certainly not unique to Spurs, they just seem to have more homegrown players coming through than most Premier League clubs in recent years.

Not sure too many non-West Ham fans would have thought £10m for James Tomkins was exactly good value either.

Jose Fonte has made 311 interceptions in the Premier League since 2013/14, only Laurent Koscielny has more in that time (364).
