We managed to shed 17 points between this season and last without any effort, all we need is to sign a mercurial midfield talent that is going to have the season of his life and 8th place is ours. Probably.

Extra 7 points...

Not playing Randolph would have got us that...

Add a proper striker and that would have been at least another 9 or so points comfortably

A rightback might have saved a few more as well given the number of goals conceded from that spot.

Losing Payet and not replacing him with someone that can keep possession of the ball also cost us

Other than a rightback I think our defence is fine for next season... Reid and Ogbonna as first choice with Fonte, Collins and Kouyate offering cover isn't bad for where we are.

What happens in front of them is the biggest problem and a lack of attacking quality

Atsu has signed for Newcastle for £6 million. We should have been all over that.....

Would rather see us land a striker and right back as a matter of priority.

He only started 15 games for them in the championship this season. Surprised they've made that one permanent.

Struggled at Everton and Bournemouth, not sure he's a Premier League player tbh.

Edit - also haven't they signed him as part of a loan-to-buy deal, so we couldn't have signed him anyway?

22 goals in 75 games, 53 of them starts, not as bad as people think. He'd be a legend for us with those stats, the irony being that he could well have been, if only he'd done more to impress 'Arry in that 0-0 behind closed doors friendly with Barnet![/quote]

Didn't happen schevcenko himself said that redknapp was talking b*llocks

Got a feeling we'll all be sick of seeing it by the end of August

Lost 41 points from winning positions since Bilic took over. TBF all teams drop points, but that is huge.

Half of that is worth 10 points a season.

Someone posted the figures, our goals against was far better when we played a back 3. That may well be the way forward for next season. Given Conte plays it at Chelsea I think it might be back in vogue for a bit. Lanzini, Feghouli, Ayew and Antonio plus 2 quality mobile strikers and the front 3 would be potent and baring long term injuries strong. Carroll as plan B, Fletcher as cover, Martinez possibly if we cannot find the right loan (I.e. Not another Oxford to Reading)

We have 2 good LWB, only worry as to RWB is if the system would suit Zabaletta if he signs. Central defence is not too bad, especially given we can shift Kouyate in if required albeit I like his energy in midfield but maybe Fernandes can replace this. He seems to have real potential.

As I say if we keep who we want this window should be about quality now and talent for the future.

In a flat back four, we were caught out with Creswell playing due to his height. Teams exploited the right back slot so Cresswell had to move central when our centre back covered one of the bolt on options for right back. They pinged a high ball over his head and had a player challenge him with a winger closing in behind.

It was a symptom of failing to cover right back properly, but also showed a weakness. If we stick with a back three, then Creswell is fine with Arthur. If Slav wants to play four at the back, we will need either a taller centre back or left back.

Right back has been done to death, but its all about intelligence and positional sense. Its where Byram lacks and is caught out of position a lot hence the yellows. Zabaletta would be an upgrade and welcomed. Not sure about him in a wing back position?

We are short of pace and composure in defensive midfield/centre midfield. We need a player who can break up play but can also surge forward and cover back. We don't have that currently.

Striker position is obvious

Goalkeeper is one place where I would like to see us strengthen. Adrian looked good because Randolph looked so bad. Neither has a presence and both make rash judgements.

So for me, its 5 quality players in.

Make you right BH but doubt the board will fund five. Zab plus two decent fees is the best I expect (sadly).

I imagine a DM and first choice GK is not even in their thinking!

Regarding the DM - Krychowiak is out of favour at PSG, worth a bid at least surely?
