Re: The summer transfer window 2019 thread
The problem with signing Medel is that we will have exactly the same problem with him in 12 months that we have now with Sanchez.
We will have a 33 year old that can really only play one position who's not a major upgrade (if any) on Obiang.
What's the point?
For that role I'd rather we get a utility player, someone who can play CDM but who can also either play centre back or move further forward into midfield if required such as a Kouyoute in hes prime.
Theres more options out there right now, I'd sit tight and wait a bit.

Well, you've successfully sold it to me mateHoustonHammer24 wrote:I will keep saying it, but Erick Pulgar is apparently available for £10.8m which is roughly £2m more than we are getting for Obiang after add-ons.
Young, all action midfielder who is great at reading the game and a good tackler as well. Pellegrini has mentioned he has tried to bring more Chileans to West Ham (Aranguiz, Medel, Maripan), why not bring in one who will instantly improve our CM depth charts for minimal outlay. He may cost twice the fee of Medel, but will be easily on half the wages, if not less, and would actually have resale value as a worst case scenario.
Heck, you could even get rid of Sanchez for whatever fee anyone will pay and bring in this Palhinha chap as well!
CMs sorted, net spend ~£4m.

Re: The summer transfer window 2019 thread
Probably because we can’t afford a decent option there for some reason. Medel gives us a body who can play a role in a team that often got bullied out of games last season. A role that Sanchez clearly isn’t going to do. A role that Obiang didn’t do ether.paulhs1 wrote:The problem with signing Medel is that we will have exactly the same problem with him in 12 months that we have now with Sanchez.

Medel is yet another stop gap but next Summer the budget is reset and we might buy another two expensive players, a left back and a holding midfielder. We don’t know that granted but going into this season Medel is a means to an end.

Totally agree. He seems to be a player that MP likes and originally wanted instead of Sanchez but he was too expensive then so if he ticks boxes for the manager, I'm in.HammerMan2004 wrote:

However if I was Pellers, I'd be saying to the board, I will take Medel just now but I want a "transfer float" in January "just in case"

Hammerman2004....a stop gap aint the answer. Sanchez is a stop gap and look where we are now.
As someone else said in this thread....make a mistake once buy twice.
Lets sit tight and see what transpires in the next few weeks. We're not desperate as Rice is fit and ready for the city game anyway.

Re: The summer transfer window 2019 thread
what about if that BBM could get us into a top 7 place and Europe ? then it satisfies Haller, keeps Anderson happy and another reason for Rice to hang around longer ?
or we go stop gap again, maybe miss out and it puts pressure on those players who want European competition
false economy
this feels a little like the Payet season when we had a REAL chance to push on.

I agree we should sit tight, but if we do lose out on Medel we’ll be lesser for it.paulhs1 wrote:Hammerman2004....a stop gap aint the answer. Sanchez is a stop gap and look where we are now.

Sanchez signed a two year deal and will be gone next summer. So the big money signing will happen then anyway, until then, we need someone better than Sanchez.

You're assuming that next summers big buy will be a CDM. but we may have other priorities next summer!
I think for now theres an upgrade out there without needing to spend big.

More than enough time Cuenca. Plenty of time. Also the market is being held up by a few signings...such as Maguire etc. I think we will see more players freed up in a week or so.Cuenca 'ammer wrote:paul

Last thing we want is to put our eggs in 1 basket (Medel) only to have a better player come available shortly afterwards.
Is there anyone else even rumoured interested in him?
Re: The summer transfer window 2019 thread
The most frustrating thing for me is that I genuinely believe we’re only a handful of changes away from having a squad to challenge the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Man Utd. I really don’t think we’re too far away, and it’s not because I think we’re amazing, but more because I don’t think they’re that great at all.
Cresswell > Bertrand
Obiang & Cullen > Pulgar
Sanchez > Palhinha (even Oxford must be able to do a better job than Sanchez, surely!?)
Hernandez > Balotelli (or a player like that who can lead the line)
That would make our first XI very strong (arguably stronger than the above three big guns) with a good selection of squad players to choose from.

I don’t see us getting Medel, or else we would have already made our move.

Re: The summer transfer window 2019 thread
I don't want to panic.........
as far as I know (but u-d-c will know for sure) no one is interested - July 12 had Marseille interested..but that's about it....
Pulgar has a 12M Euros release clause - 15M if a "select" group of clubs come in - so that's 12M for us then
and if are getting 7-8M for Obiang, it would be a no brainer....
25, almost 6 ft tall.
a much better bet than Medel, and from the papers Medel will be around 5M.
chuck in the other 7M - Sully could find it down the back of his couch...
you would have a resale value if it doesn't work out.
