Yep. Wonder how quickly it took us to up our bid from 4.5m to their asking price once Villa became interested...those low-ball bid tactics really fell flat on it's face after Basel called our bluff! At least we're getting our man by the sounds of it now tho.

And if we can bring in a decent defensive midfielder like Ascacibar or Bakayoko on loan to replace Obiang it will be a superb window

I’m still convinced you can’t low ball a player like that. Don’t forget he is leaving a club who are in a position to qualify for the Champions League. He is also an international, and his stats are good.

We don’t offer what Basel have at the moment, so you need to use the power of monetary persuasion and leveraging the player’s desire to play in England. If we low balled and stuck to our guns, we wouldn’t get the player.

Chicarito's only value is in the box. It is pointless asking him to link play outside the box and move wide as that is not his game.

This is one of the most oft quoted myths on this forum.
He is not much kop as lone target man with a deep midfield nowhere near him, but he is decent at receiving the ball in crowded areas, and passing it on, or laying it off. His link play is actually very good as he has proved many times in the system he plays for Mexico.
People keep saying he doesn't fit Pelligini's style of play - that may have been the case with players previously available but he has never played with Fornals, and a fit Lanzini and Wilshire buzzing around him, threading balls to him.
Haller is clearly first choice to start the season, but there is no guarantee he will make an immediate impact or that he will be able to sustain the physical nature of the premier league for every game. He may really struggle until Christmas
Hernandez playing at CF, with a combination of Antonio, Andersen, Fornals, Lanzini, Yarmalenko and Wilshire all supporting him in numbers is a very appealing Plan B, and may even become Plan A at some stage

Every time I see his name mentioned, I want Ascacibar a little bit more - and I'm still not convinced he's got the attributes I really wanted in a midfielder to start for us alongside Rice.

I can't see it happening, to be honest, but maybe we'll keep an interest going. Can't imagine that if he really is an option another European team won't sign him in the three weeks of the window that they have available to them.

I can see us offering Ogbonna back to Italy on a perm or Sanchez on loan to anyone who will take him.

Both Ogbonna and Reid are 32 next year, ideally we'd be looking to move one on. If they're sure on Reid's fitness I'd be happy to see Ogbonna go.

Palace seem to be taking any deadwood they can get their hands on.. maybe they'll take him and Sanchez :lol:

Josef Hugi (1951-60, 34 caps, 22 goals)

An idol of both Basel and the Swiss national team, Josef Hugi was a prolific goalscorer at club and international level. For Basel, he netted 224 times in just 320 matches during a 14-year spell with the team.

While his international career was relatively short, Hugi made a lasting impression with 22 goals in just 34 appearances. His finest moment came at the 1954 World Cup on home soil as he scored six goals, a tally only bettered by the great Hungarian Sandor Kocsis.

Those six goals also make him the highest scorer for Switzerland in World Cups despite only having featured in the tournament once.

Turkyilmaz, Stephane Chapuisat, Alexandre Frei (who also began his senior career with Basel, as did Marko Streller and Ottmar Hitzfeld (although the latter is German)).

Derby favourites to sign West Ham starlet

Derby are in pole position to beat off competition from a host of Championship rivals for West Ham starlet Grady Diangana on loan, reports James Nursey.

Diangana, 21, broke into the first team last season, making his debut in an 8-0 Carabao Cup rout of Macclesfield in September, when he scored twice.

He went on to make 17 appearances in the Premier League for Manuel Pellegrini’s men last season.

But he is up against Felipe Anderson, Michail Antonio, Andriy Yarmolenko and Robert Snodgrass for spots on either flank for the Hammers.

Diangana joined their ranks at the age of 12 and will get a chance to play alongside Wayne Rooney from January after the ex-England skipper agreed to join Derby in the next window.

Now now Pat, I think we both know there is no such thing as the 'next Batistuta', for no mere mortal can ever live up to those standards. Until we discover life on other planets, and conduct a thorough scouting of their footballing talents, it is simply impossible for any player to live up to his standards.

Drmic is only the next Ronaldo and/or Messi.
