Re: The summer transfer window 2019 thread
Thing is most clubs who might want Hernandez are likely paying their top players around £50k a week and see zero sell on value so might pay circa £5m for him. Given that we would have to pay at least that £5m to him to compensate for lost wages (he can no doubt see a substantial signing on fee when he is on a free next summer as well) is it a deal really worth doing or do we keep him until at least January by when we know if the new guys have settled or are Zaza mark 2?
Yes if we sell it frees up a spot but unless there is a player we are really keen on all that would do us add another squad player for say £10-£15m when next summer that could be used to augment a real first team choice as Sanchez leaves.
Too often recently the planning has been short term - I do feel that MP/MH take a longer view with planning and signings with quality trumping quantity whenever possible.

So sayeth the jealous and spiteful football Gods.
On a similar thought I wonder how often VAR mysteriously goes AWOL when we play a top 6 club.

You will struggle to get someone better than Rice as a Defensive Midfielder, unless you paid through the roof for one and even then it would be a waste of time as Rice is already the real deal who will only get better with age.

Re: The summer transfer window 2019 thread
Or, you know, people have watched and seen that this is what our offensive players, and especially our signings, do. Numbers from last season:ashbanki wrote: People ,naively, seem to think that our offensive players will defend from the front.
Haller - 0.8 tackles and 0.5 interceptions per game (vs Arnautovic, 0.3 and 0.1)
Fornals - 1.4 tackles and 0.7 interceptions per game (vs Snodgrass, 1.3 and 0.3)
Anderson - 2.5 tackles and 1.1 interceptions per game
Lanzini - 1.2 tackles and 0.9 interception per games (low number of games last season, but similar numbers in 15/16 and 16/17)
We've got players that tackle in our front four, and they'll be looking to press the defenders - they all do it, and Haller notably is a massive upgrade at it against Arnautovic.
That's a pretty bold claim to make, for me - I do think Rice has his faults, but I don't think we can start to push him down the pecking order right now. We need someone better than Sanchez as a DM. Noble isn't the same type of player as either of them, and is more likely to be the passer alongside - probably second to Wilshere for that role when he's fit, unless Pellegrini pulls Lanzini or Fornals deeper.kitthehammer wrote:I still think we are missing a decent defensive midfielder. More over, I just don't think Pellegrini wants one.

Although I think he said something like "No I think thats sorted" - meaning we are done - but could be wrong
He could have meant "No sdfjsdfskdjf" we are not done.

Rice is nailed on our DM in front of the defence. Top up and coming player.
We’d need to spend £60 Million to make any difference.

I would hazard a rough guess at something like, “No, we’re ok now.”

From BBC transfer feed:
West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini is speaking in his pre-game news conference ahead of Saturday's Premier League opener against Manchester City.
He starts by giving his thoughts on new signing Albian Ajeti.
"We lost three strikers from last year's squad, so he is a good striker to compete with Chicharito, Antonio and Haller for that position," he said.
"I'm happy because we have completed the squad in the way we wanted. We have two players in each position and the best way is to have competition. We have done what we needed."

The guy is the dogs b*llocks, Sulli needs to recall that loan he made to his mate and throw everything we have at getting him in so we can challenge for the league title :lol:Shaun Newton wrote:After watching this video, I will be upset if I don't see him with crossed forearms by 5!

His two major attributes:
- Tackling
- Turning defence into attack quickly.
If the asking price of 15mil is true, this is by far one of the biggest cock-ups from the owners. I say owners because Pellegrini said clearly he would replace Obiang.

Re: The summer transfer window 2019 thread
Rice is our number one DM and Sanchez is his back up for now, we don't need another one we are fine, we can exchange Sanchez next season.

I think that answers our question on what position Pellegrini considers to be Antonio's main one.Hamsta wrote:"We lost three strikers from last year's squad, so he is a good striker to compete with Chicharito, Antonio and Haller for that position," he said.

Re: The summer transfer window 2019 thread
Thats why the DM needs to complement rice and not be a direct backup. A players who has more movement and agressive in the mould of Ascacibar, our problem is when Jack gets injured we are left with noble and sanchez to fill that gap.ageing hammer wrote:Rice is our number one DM and Sanchez is his back up for now, we don't need another one we are fine, we can exchange Sanchez next season.

You won’t attract a world class player to sit on the bench behind Rice, or you’re wasting Rice’s development by benching him.Marky wrote:

You can draw a similar situation with our keepers, out Number 1 who has had amazing PL stats to our Number 3 who has not played in the PL.

Pelle said in his presser 'No, we are ok now'. And that he is happy with the squad.
I would say that is it for us. Yes a specialist DM would have been nice but its not like we are absolutley down to the bare bones there - we have Rice, Sanchez, Wilshere, Fornals, Lanzini, Noble that all play CM (even Zab at a stretch).

And yet some on here would be furious if we sold for less than that.fjthegrey wrote:We could replace Rice for way less than £60mil.
Non-WHU so everyone can ignore me if they want, but - does anybody understand how 'image rights' can stop a transfer happening (i.e. Dybala to Spurs)? Because I really don't get that - is it to do with the player having a personal sponsor (like Adidas) and them not wanting the player pictured wearing a rival brand (like Nike)? Or something else completely?

Totally agree with OohAahbutler within the limitations imposed Management have played a blinder, at least on paper and deserve a medal, but yes I think you are spot on in that last line of yours, it truly gives me fears I last had when behind the settee hiding from the Daleks ... Or more commonly known as last season.HammerAl wrote:Horses for courses. In some matches we won't need to play with two DMs, but in others we will. Our ball retention will be better with the likes of Rice, Wilshere and Fornals in the middle, but I'm still worried about how easy it will be for the opposition to waltz through the middle.
