What % of your life does West Ham consume?

Does exactly what it says on the tin - the forum for football-related discussion.

What % of your life does West Ham consume?

Post by westham,eggyandchips » Tue Jun 11, 2019 3:11 pm

I was thinking about this the other day.

Growing up, when I was about 11/12, before the discovery of girls and booze it was probably about 80-90% the other 10/20% I spent playing football. I had home and away kits, had a ST, attended as many away games as possible spent hours on teletext waiting for our next signing to be announced.

Now, its probably the opposite. I rarely bother with buying club merchandise, attend about 3 games a season and as for new signings- until a player signs I'm not arse at all.

Learnt has I've got older that West Ham/football is not that important in the grand scheme of things so spend less time being consumed by it.

Arrive 10 minutes before kick-off, no pre or post match chit-chat/beers and head off straight out after the whistle.

No SKY/BT channels so probably about 10% with MOTD.

Good thread idea

Up until I was about 15, my out of school interests were probably a straight 25% split between football, comic books, the opposite sex, and music.

As an adult, the football side has definitely decreased, and 25% is “being moaned at by the opposite sex”

I reckon West Ham is about 15% now

In my experience, the pre/post match chit chat & beers was the highlight of going to watch a West Ham.

I don't think it will surprise anyone to suggest that as we get older and real life takes hold, the importance and significance West Ham plays in our lives lessens.

When i was younger, it was probably 60-70% of my life.

Now? 10-20% i'd wager.

I wear WHU merchandise while I go running, my phone screensaver is a picture of my little girl wearing a West Ham kit and check WHU related websites regularly.
Games conflict a lot with family life or playing football myself (which is primarily on a Saturday in Holland). MOTD doesn't start until 23.30 and as WHU are always on last, I skip that to as the kids don't sleep in.

So, the club is constant on top of mind, but the actual time spend is not what it used to be.

I didn't realise how much it had decreased until I started thinking about it for this thread.

It's probably at about 5% at the moment, will probably pick up to about 20% when the season starts. I try to keep getting back into it more, but then the stadium or something about the club knocks it back down.

My other half will probably laugh at me thinking it's so low though

During the Payet season I watched every single match including 3 at the Boleyn. Ever since the move my interest has been on the decline. I used to plan and arrange my weekends around kick off times but now I may not even check the score and only find out via Google updates or mates messaging me. But I am now more fascinated with the soap opera behind the scenes rather than the actual football on the pitch, much like watching WWE at times.

Same.

I still love the club as much as I ever have, but as I’ve got older I’ve just found other priorities and interests in life to go with it.

If it wasn't for the before and after pints and the resulting talking b*llocks I wouldn't bother going.

Recently gelped my folks move house and found loads of my old boxes from when I was a boy....hundreds and hundreds of posters, scrapbooks, Subbuteo league tables I made with my brother....even Subbuteo cricket scorecards where i pretended the players were Cottee, Bishop, Morley etc etc....so i used to be absolutely obsessed and say over 90% (my school grades would probably agree it was definitely in the 90's)

As for now...its probably only slightly shorter....although I can see my 3yr old son turning into the young me more and more every day and thereby increasing my %age more as he grows up!....he just runs round the house playing football in his WHU kit all the time, shouting "OI BIG BOY...WHATS YOUR NAME?!
