all the differing opinions and chatter about JW is likely moot anyway, as we all know the lad won’t last more than a few games before he is out through injury again.

My disappointment isn't that we didn't replace Obiang as such, it was that we didn't replace Sanchez as well in the summer. I didn't feel we needed 3 DMs in the squad, 2 specialists is enough with some central midfielders like Noble who can also play that role (someone who plays it a lot better than Sanchez), but I did want one better than Sanchez to come in and replace him as I really do think he's horse ****.

Exactly. We only have 4 players who can play centre-midfield. One of them has played about 150 games in the 10 years and one of them was bang average 5 years ago and is now 33.

If that's the case, Pat, I say bring it on - Rice with Fornals.

Truth is, his pre-season form aside, I think Wilshere hasn't shone in the first couple of games of the season and clearly Pellegrini thinks there is an alternative way to play without him given he pulled him at half time at the weekend - unless there was a knock we've not heard about.

And to bring that back to the point of the thread - I have more faith in Pellegrini working out his best team, and the necessary changes to get there, than I have done with our last 3 managers.

Snodgrass emerged as Obiang’s replacement last year before he was even gone, I think that’s pretty clear in the squad.

We’ve got Rice, Noble, Snodgrass, Wilshere and Sanchez, whilst Lanzini can play in there.

It needs to be seen with all the pieces fit, Haller and Anderson included. I think Haller’s style of play probably ends up making us more compact in the middle too as he drops in and is thus there on turnover. So far we’re two games in, against an all-time great domestic side and an away game with injured players against a side already bouncing.

Saying that, I do think we’re slightly pigeonholed now with the players we’ve got. I think we suit either a 4-3-3 or a 4-4-2 diamond. I don’t think Haller succeeds in a 4-3-3, I’m not sure he’ll want to move Anderson out of a wide role for a diamond midfield.

A lot of this to me could be solved by discipline and application. It does feel a little like an England batting line up, they’re told to go out there and play their game, even when a different mindset could solve some ills.

Always thought of Snodgrass as more of a wide man.

snoddy at this stage of his career is a useful midfielder bringing energy and graft to the midfield. he also puts in a decent corner. playing him wide is no longer an option with what we have on the wings.
I think he is a useful sub for a 30 minute blast of energy and application in our soft central area. no longer starts now.

Yep. He’s a modern midfield version of JOB. A fantastic squad player, but imo we’re in trouble if he’s a consistent starter.

i don't think Rice and Noble as a two is the answer either. Those two need one more in there.
The best way we can make two work is Sanchez and Rice IMHO, and of course, this has yet to be evidenced in any way so is heavily reliant on Sanchez being better than he has been so far.
Far from ideal, but may be the best option
That seems crazy to have a pool of talent like Anderson, Fornals, Wilshere, Lanzini and Noble, and then have to give one of the slots to Sanchez for the majority of matches. You have to believe that Pellers really believes it can work with a silky passing midfield and one DM, otherwise our summer window has potentially been a disaster.

Btw, it's not another DM I think we need (other than for cover for Rice). It's a midfielder whose main attributes are power, athleticism and stamina. Just someone who adds a steely presence. They don't need to be a DM. The 2005-6 Reo-Coker would've been quite useful in this squad (minus the arse of an agent).

I've often thought this.

England:- Get out there, do your best and see what happens.

Australia:- This is how we're going to win the match.

It was mentioned back up the thread that Pellegrini basically tells the players to take the England option, fine if you've got the budget and hence players of Real Madrid or Manchester City, not so good if you're shopping in Tesco rather than Harrods.

No point having all that attacking talent if we don't get the ball or get bullied.
It is about balance.
Sanchez is by no means the best answer in the word but at least he knows how to play that role on front of the back four
Still room for Rice and then four other more attacking players

100% see him the same way and how he should be used. Although I'm not totally against the idea he starts from time to time depending on opposition and who's available.

10 points from last 4 aways

7 goals against a team that traditionally bullied us off the ball, in two matches.

They're still on the beach though...

In the words of The Jam, That's Entertainment!

This is the kind of football we are more accustomed of seeing under Pellegrini, free flowing expansive football that's very easy on the eye, with suspect defending still being our biggest problem. Going forward however, we look a real threat and we still don't look close to being at full throttle. I feel there's plenty more to come yet once the side beds in more as the season progresses. It also shows why we don't need 2 specialist DMs in the side, wasting a place for a more expansive player on the ball ie Noble.

No sooner than I saw the line up today, I felt much better. Think he got that spot on and as the players get more match fit, I think we'll see yet more improvement

We're broadly where we'd expect to be after 3 games against these opponents at these places, aren't we?

Minimum 5 points from the next 3, surely?

Where I hoped but I never expect out of us. If anything I expect us to get tamely turned over by a couple at both Brighton and Watford.

Pleasantly surprised that we’ve managed to steer away from disaster after that 0-5 thrashing, even whilst not playing anywhere near what we are capable of.

Maripan have just signed for Monaco..

https://www.asmonaco.com/guillermo-mari ... as-monaco/

Thats really makes me angry, as I really think, we do not have that kind of strong squad many think...

Today, Balbuena out, now Maripan...

I like and follow Manuel for a good while, but...

Those are one of his typical strange signs and mistakes, like Bony and Mangala as he was in ManCity....

We could have sent Ogbonna on loan, and with the money for Ajeti +5m, bring Maripán.. and in the ofensive to play Silva or the other young "black" young forward from Portugal..

Im really gutted we miseed this... Really.. :thdn:

We needed another striker though, so I don’t think we should have used the Ajeti money on anyone but Ajeti.
