Its a strange approach he has to the short ball aint it? He sort of ducks his head into it. Very odd.smuts wrote:Plucky from Denly....but you take your eyes off it that's what happens.

Re: England Cricket Summer 2019 ODI World Cup and Ashes
Stokes 2 off 50 balls.
Exactly what was required at the ass end of the day. Root, Denly, Stokes all batted like proper test cricketers today. Why do they wait until it’s virtually a lost cause?
If the current pair can stand up to the new ball early doors tomorrow (when is it due, must be soon?) we’ll win this. We don’t have to chase runs. Just block, nudge and leave and Stokes and Butler can swing the bat in the afternoon/Monday....and yes I have lumped on.

Re: England Cricket Summer 2019 ODI World Cup and Ashes
Proper test batting... I expect we won't make lunch today, but at least this was something
We've been excellent over the last 18 months to 2 years at allowing 1 innings paper over the cracks... I do believe the same will happen now with Denly (1 more chance because of this innings), when he should be ditched. Roy should be ditched immediately too.
We've sacrificed this Ashes for the ODI World Cup and done so knowingly...
Hopefully the focus will change once Bayliss leaves, but I'm not sure Ed Smith has a clue about building a test team. He is one of the chief 'he does it in ODI's so surely can do it in Tests' architects. Ignoring the county game for glitz and glamour of whats happening elsewhere in limited overs leagues. While there are problems with the county game... this England team could have been a lot stronger over the Bayliss reign by dipping into it more than completely ignoring it (Malan, Vince only got into the team via the one day team instead of Hildreth as a 3 - 4 year placeholder)... they waited far too long (maybe 12 - 18 months to late) and then tried to bed him Burns at the wrong time to give him the best chance. Archer is the exception, not the rule.
I expect Banton (massive, massive limited overs talent... not suited for 4 / 5 day cricket) to be called up to the test team before someone built for 4 / 5 day cricket. After the season he has had he'll be wanted for a lot of the oversea's limited overs leagues and be on the radar more than someone steadily doing it and improving in the long form (ala Sibley)
I want us to pull of the miracle today... but I don't see it happening and it will just again paper over the cracks. We win = the team doesn't change much (bar the bowlers (Anderson for Woakes))
Anyway, come on England...

England 7/4....15-8 and....2-1 to win this test.
Seems very short to me.
Lets hope it aint so short after all.....

Re: England Cricket Summer 2019 ODI World Cup and Ashes
A tiny part of me thinks that we're going to pull off another miracle at Headingley....good pitch, roasting hot for the bowlers, a few players with something to prove etc.
The reality is probably a collapse after all the hard graft yesterday and the Aussies retaining the Ashes by this afternoon.

There we go.... brain dead from Root.
New ball due in 2 overs so he comes down the pitch to try and hit it over mid wicket and gets it horribly wrong.

How good is Ben Stokes? Whatever happens here, he’s redefining what it means to be an all-rounder.
He could open the batting and do a better job than our top two.

51 partnership and the runs are flowing.....
I don't think we're going to get there but it's nice to see the Aussies all looking rather nervy. 147 to win.

Re: England Cricket Summer 2019 ODI World Cup and Ashes
My only concern is Bairstow getting carried away. There’s so much time in the game we really should be able to knock these off playing nudge and push cricket. Stokes has got it nailed.
