Re: ⚽ Aston Villa v West Ham United: Match Thread
It is of course only one game. However, as others have mentioned I think this game will give some clues as to whether we are the real deal in respect to being genuine top 6 contenders. A game that Villa will see as a home banker but one we must see as an opportunity to start flexing our muscles in this league.
Are we a solid midtable team or are we something different this year?
1-3 (Haller 2, Rice)

9th would be and improvement, anything above is a bonus.
The question would be whether that is enough to convince our better players, Haller, Rice, and Anderson etc to stick around for at least another season.

I read Charlie Nicholas's 'expert' pre match analysis of this match a little earlier and noted his summary that Jack Wilshere will come back in. Err.... no he won't Charlie and he thinks we'll lose 2-1 by the way. Err.. No we wont Charlie ''

Posted about this in the Declan Rice thread but I feel it needs to be put here and people read it and take a minute to think about it, this is from Charlie’s Villa v West Ham prediction!Puff Daddy wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2019 7:08 pm I read Charlie Nicholas's 'expert' pre match analysis of this match a little earlier and noted his summary that Jack Wilshere will come back in. ‘People are far too excited about Declan Rice, with lots of mistakes and clumsiness there’
Wow. This is someone who watches and talks about football for a living

I quite agree that this is another solid test and a good indication of how we might do this year.ironilunga wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2019 9:33 am It is of course only one game. So far we've been spanked by man city which was annoying but nothing more. Got a point away at a team that usually have a hoodoo over us. Played well and beat a Watford team, who will be wanting to be in the same area of the table as us, away. Had a professional outing in the league cup. Took Norwich apart and were unlucky not to have the score reflect that.
So a fairly positive mixed bag, but as Pellegrini himself said we have to be taking 3 points from these sorts of games if we want to be where we want to be at the end of the season.
If we actually show some focus and key players show up we should have more than enough. However focus, away, against newly promoted or bottom half teams has not been our standard in recent seasons.
A score draw wouldn't surprise me but I'll go 1-2 with Villa scoring first.

We’ve certainly been guilty of lacking urgency from the start in these sort of fixtures in the past - something which the top sides don’t do.
We may have more talent than them on the pitch but if we don’t match their work ethic we won’t come away with anything.

Agree 100%, claretnblue.
The performance against Norwich was excellent, but let’s not put too much of a positive gloss on what came before: Watford we looked good going forward, but were lucky not to concede at least as many as we scored, the point at Brighton was against the run of play (a good trait to have, I know) and we made hard work of it at Newport.
I think Noble is key. He needs to set the tempo from the outset and make sure we’re up for it from the get-go. We’ve certainly got enough to play Villa off the park, but only if enough of our players want it.

A huge test of character for our lot because the opportunity to go anywhere between top 3-5 is glaring. We bottled going up a level every time last year.

I'd put Wilshere in for Yarmolenko in this one.
(4-3-3) Fab: Fred: Arfur: Diop: Ogbonna: Rice: Wilshere: Noble: Lanzini: Anderson: Haller
Subs: Bob: Cresswell: Balbuena: Snodders: Fornals: Yarmolenko: Ajeti

Looking at the table now the top 7 is basically the big 6 plus leicester (the one team who've won the league outside those 6). Everton are 8th, and they're next on the list of big clubs. We're sat there just behind... if we can put in a performance and win this one things are looking very good.
I just dissapointed that the squad could be so much better if we had Byram, Hernandes, Grady [and Antonio fit]. Not saying I have a problem with the club on any individual decision, but i'd argue we're look a lot better if they were all here this year.

We could be 2nd, level on points with Man City come Monday.
I’m waiting til that point until I dare to dream of a top seven finish.
