West Ham Utd 1-2 Crystal Palace (05/10/19)

Re: ⚽ West Ham United v Crystal Palace: Match Thread
I’ve decided to get pissed and play on fifa tonight in the hope it will dampen some of the disappointment after losing today.
I’m walking around the house like a proper miserable git. And the missus has just said “what do you expect. It is West Ham”.

Spot on.DannyboyDJL wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 8:15 pm The slow build up and side ways passing is because we have slow players. Our quickest player likes to drop onto the half way line for some reason.
Haller, Yarmolenko, Noble and Lanzini are all are properly slow and Anderson doesn't hurt teams with his pace. The only pace we have in attacking positions is when Fredericks and Masuaku overlap and we are missing Arthur at the minute.
For the last 3 matches Anderson has been frustrating in our general build up play. Yes he has assisted, so no complaints there, but he seems very easy to defend by not allowing him to receive the ball on the run by not allowing any space to run into. Instead he’s been restricted to turning back on himself in possession. Most balls played forward by him have been inaccurate and give possession back to the opposition.
His forte isn’t running past the full back with the ball and opposing managers look to have realised this. Alternatively Yarmalenko does alot of his work higher up the pitch and tried to bring Haller into play much more. I’d experiment with dropping Anderson next time out.
Re: ⚽ West Ham United v Crystal Palace: Match Thread
I think Noble is pushed up as he can be counted on to keep running and chasing the opos defence. For me you might as well play another forward if Noble is going to be used like this and just let Noble play more midfield

Typical West Ham.
Got to get out of that habit of these predictable defeats if we want to have a run at the top 6/7.

We lost because we weren't good enough - and also that as a club, on every level, never ever ever fail, on any level, ever, when they've got a chance to actually do something - whether it's be decent for a few years or win a game - to let you down.
Nice goal.
Nice goal.

We are so in a false position, absolutely awful.
We have been fortunate in how our fixtures have fallen for us, we are a mid table team at best and I'm not at all convinced that we are anymore than that.
Could be worse, we could be Spurs..

Dissapointed, but lets leave the histrionics aside. Palace were lucky and nicked it. We had enough clear cut chances to win that handsomely. Rice had a brain fart and gifted them an opportunity they didnt deserve, but hey **** happens. Yes, we were not great but we certainly were not poor either. We will play worse and win. Thought Creswell played Zaha superbly. Also thought Ogbonna, Rice and Fredricks excellent.

Agreed that Lanzini was very poor today & I thought Anderson’s wasn’t his best either, definitely need more end product from both

He used to play where Rice plays. Do you honestly think he could do that now? Like every player of his age, he's getting slower and Pellers is using him differently, but he's using him as an attacking midfielder and he can't really dribble past players, score, run beyond the striker and isn't really skillful. It's not his fault, it's not what he's good at, but it's part of the reason why Haller is looking so isolated. He's not even taking free kicks or corners anymore.WorcesterWHU wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 8:21 pm What legs have Noble apparently lost? He never had any when he was 18. It's like saying Sheringham lost a yard of pace; we're not talking about the demise of Michael Owen here.

Does anyone else think the players believe their own hype?

Calmed down a bit and this is a fair assessment I’d say. Palace were well organised and frustrated us but we still had enough chances to win the game, and I think they’d have happily taken a point before the game and even in the final 10 minute - they certainly played that way.Diogenes wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 8:38 pm Dissapointed, but lets leave the histrionics aside. One harsh but fair penalty against us (as contradicting as that sounds) and a stupid free kick to give away by Fredericks I though.
Onto Everton.
Re: ⚽ West Ham United v Crystal Palace: Match Thread
A chance for us to go third, but you would never have known it from the players on the pitch.
A typical West Ham performance, and the big club mentality that Pellergrini talks of is still miles away.
Same old same old I'm afraid.
Mid-table fodder.

Re: ⚽ West Ham United v Crystal Palace: Match Thread
wasn't the free kick because Roberto kicked the ball to Fred, who didn't exactly control it well enough and having given the ball away, wasn't in position to defend properly and got caught wrong side of Zaha and had to drag him down - weren't we clamouring for players to "take one for the team" the other week when opponents got into a counter attack situation ?

Danny he was used in that position previously because we never had anyone else to do it, it’s never been his best position. He’s an outstanding passer of the ball, always available and makes us tick, that’s his job.
Lanzini, yarmo, Anderson are the ones charged with getting close to Haller and going beyond him and providing the goals and assist

Re: ⚽ West Ham United v Crystal Palace: Match Thread
Forget the rest of the game. What frustrates me is at home, v Palace, 1 - 1, we should be the team in the last 15 mins on the attack. Palace should be the team trying to hold out for an away point. If we have any ambition we need to be bossing that.
Yet Palace dominated possession and were the team pushing forward. It was hardly a surprise they scored.
Haller, Lanzini, Anderson, Yarmolenko. That should be enough talent to win a game. Noble and Rice should have enough at home to get hold of the ball. Yet we let Palace run the last part of the game.
Disappointing and not good enough.

We lost a game we should have won but it's not quite the disaster some seem to think. Lanzini was so anonymous today that I forgot he was on the pitch. There's the problem, it's the key position in our formation. Whoever plays there has to support Haller l don't understand criticism of noble, I thought he led the way throughout. Perhaps this will remind the players we're not quite there yet
