Callum McCowatt scores on debut as new-look All Whites lose to Republic of Ireland

Winston Reid looked comfortable, playing his first competitive senior match in 18 months, but flared up when Irish whiz kid Troy Parrott fouled him in the back of his injury-plagued right knee, and was replaced by Bill Tuiloma at halftime.

Danny Hay pleased as All Whites complete the first piece of their 'jigsaw puzzle'
Hay said Winston Reid, Ryan Thomas, and Chris Wood wouldn't be travelling with the rest of the All Whites to Lithuania and will now return to their clubs.

"This is about ensuring that every single player on this trip gets a really good opportunity and can walk away knowing that we've had a good look at their character, their mentality, how invested they are in the direction we're taking the team, and their ability to play the way I want them to play.

"While it's going to be tough losing, I guess you could argue, our three best players, or the three biggest names in our squad, it just gives an opportunity to other players.

"There will come a time when we need to win games, but now's not that time, this is about developing a team and developing our style of play. Once we get into World Cup qualifiers, that changes obviously.

Pelle's never played with a back three, has he?

Not part of the grand scheme !

If he was open to it he would have done so by now having 3 decent C/B's already ?

Reid and Oggy at the back and move Diop forward to play alongside Rice? Maybe? Or not?

I would put Reid and Rice as the CB's and get in another defensive midfielder in January maybe that Granit bloke from the Arse ( not sure if he is a DM)

Diop needs to sit out half a dozen games, not be moved into a more vulnerable position where his lack of awareness would be further exposed. But I am all for replacing the current pairing with Reid and Ogbonna.

We need to buy an actual midfielder or midfielders. Ones who can watch for runners, control, pass and run. We have managed to mould Rice but he is still quite limited in some aspects of his play. Gold and Sulli would love it though if we were able to cobble together some patchwork midfield and defence from our broken biscuit assortment. It would be a solution and negate the need to buy anyone decent.

For simply scoring THAT goal, I will never utter a bad word against him.

Hope we one day get to sing his name in Claret & Blue once more.

Sean Maguire (former Cork City and West Ham) scored a cracking goal first senior goal for Ireland, maybe we left him go too soon.

Maguire is alright but he's found his level at Preston IMHO.

Great. I hope he stays fit. Him and Ogbonna would be a massive upgrade.

Your point still stands but we were playing Brighton in the cup.

They're in the top league. Another goal for Holland and Scully as well.

for the life of me, I cannot understand why Holland isn't even making the bench.

I mean honestly, when Antonio was out we have no one at all that in some way was different. none.

now he might be awful. he really might especially now in a struggling side and as I mentioned, they are in tier 2 of the under 21's.

still Diangana had some great bright moments. he cannot be in any way shape or form put in less effort at least than Anderson.

I understand not wanting to destroy kids confidence but if this lot in the first XI haven't had their confidence destroyed maybe someone coming in, with youth and not a care in the world, would actually add something we don't currently have. someone playing with no fear. for sure Diagana played with no fear. circumstance were a bit different but...................
