First Time At Upton Park

Post by keithwright1977 » Tue Dec 17, 2019 9:35 am

My first time at Upton Park was when I was 12, at the time i lived on a North London estate and I didn’t really support any team but my mate and his family were all West Ham supporters. It was his birthday and his family paid for us to go and watch the Hammers. Of all the games to go to the Hammers v Millwall April 22nd 1989. Of course we won, Julian scored and I was hooked for life. What a start and for better or worse I wouldn’t change it for the world 🛠

My first game was a couple of weeks later. Home to Luton. We won that as well.

My first time we played I think it was either chester or chestefield and we won 5-1.
My dad took us into the chicken run almost right in the centre and I was hooked and have been ever since.
Have watched us live win every thing that we have ever won. Those were the days.
I was about eleven then. 1947.

Was taken by my older brother to watch the reserves play sometime before Christmas in 1963. Can't remember the opposition. It was quite a trip from Stepney by bus in them days. We got there before the gates opened and there was a queue of youngsters along the railings from the Green Street entrance.

Once inside they played music from the charts. Remember hearing "I'll Get You in the End" - the B-side to She Loves You by the Beatles - a song that always takes me back to the North Bank as it stood then. The cage was open then too and if you were smart you could get the front "seat" there and dangle your legs through the railings with the best view.

A short time afterwards we went and saw the youths play under the lights in a game where they won either 9 or 10 nil. Might have been v Wellingborough or some name like that. Crowd kept singing for one more goal from about five onwards and we weren't disappointed.

My brother was just 11, and I was 8. Different world.

Hey Codger! That was my old man’s first season as well - what’s the chances of that?

When I moan about the trains he often tells me that he used to get a lift from a neighbour who had one of the few cars in Dagenham.

72 years. Good on you fella 👍

May 1980 Home to Wrexham, won 1-0, Ray Stewart Penalty, we was presented with the second division title at the end of the game.

My dad had to buy two tickets off some touts outside the ground for us to get in.

There was only 16000 at Upton Park that day but the ground was rocking. 3-0 up singing bubbles. I had been to other grounds before including spurs, Arsenal and millwall (lucky escape) but Upton Park was different, there was a family feel and I just felt at home there.

2001, Rio Ferdinand's first game back at Upton Park for Leeds. Lost 2-0 and in true West Ham fashion, Ferdinand scored. Pretty sure Robbie Keane scored the other one and I vividly remember David Batty being sent off.

My Grandad took me to that game and I remember the immortal words he said as we left the ground..."Get used to it boy".

Burnley at home in the League Cup in 1980. Won 4-0 which was a step towards Wembley the following March (my 10th birthday).

Went to following Saturday and we beat Shrewsbury 3-0 - and then an open day on the Sunday holding the FA Cup, Stadium tour and meeting players.

What a time to be a hammer :crest:

Quite a few of us appear to be around the same age. Should rename the site ‘Knees ****ed Mother Brown’.

We’ve done this before so I know a few of us made our debuts to Leeds in ‘77/8 losing 0:1 and getting relegated that season. Made the Golden Age ‘80-86 all the sweeter.

11 September 1999: West Ham 1-0 Watford.

Early Birthday Present from my uncle. East stand upper. Still one of my most memorable birthday presents.

Next game I went to was the 5-4 against Bradford.
