I don't think we're signing anyone this week.
Would you elaborate on the "we'll be cheaper" bit. Why?

West Ham co-owner David Sullivan was today attempting to relieve the pressure on his ailing team by signing at least two players before Friday’s transfer deadline.

This a pardon? Post or a bit of itk?

Sullivan reportedly values the club at £500m. Considering they don’t own the stadium, that’s a pretty hefty wedge.
Actually it is probably 25% tops over valued especially if paying off the debt to them is in the price and the only significant debt.

Likely pre transfer profit of something like £50m a year in the Premier and no sign TV revenue will drop off anytime soon. Businessmen can look at that and say we can take £20/30m out a season in earnings on a business that will only lose value with relegation for an extended period.

Thing is whether a new owner would be interested in the money (ours) or in the “glory” - that is when the need for significant investment comes in.

I don't follow the Academy, and apologies if this has already been answered, but haven't we got any youngsters who could play a striker role - the next Tony Cottee ?

I wonder if Dean Ashton's fit yet

Anthony Scully has 15 goals in 18 appearances. 5 assists too. Apparently he's a midfielder but I thought he had been playing up top.

£80m Headbanger

Already laying the foundation that anything spent now comes out of the summer budget to justify underspending in that window on the off chance we are still in the league.

Always the same with these jokers. Still at least they saved £3.50 in wages by leaving it all to the last minute

Ken’s certainly a reliable old hand, but that’s a very empty article. Sounds like fed information.

“At least two” - the covering all bases lingo from Sully
Speculative names - going off reports.

I’d guess it means it’s as scattergun as suggested and it’s info given out to appease.

On the plus side... at least they're making it clear that Moyes does want reinforcements - it'll still look bad for them if they don't deliver

Thought Ken Dyer was better than including transparent flannel like that £80m figure.

Even if you ignore

a. every penny we received inwards for sales
b. AND include the highest of the figures reported for the new arrivals
c. AND ignore the offsetting effect achieved by savings on the overall wage bill

i.e. the rosiest possible massaging of the figures.

Still only gets you to c. £69m.

On Saturday, the Hammers boss watched Baldock score a hat-trick as his side beat Chesterfield 6-2, with Allardyce in the crowd again on Tuesday night as MK Dons knocked Norwich out of the Carling Cup with a 4-0 win thanks to another goal from the 22-year-old.
In fairness, if the big man was knocking back pints of wine he may well have forgotten going to those games.

My recollection – very possibly wrong – was that the rotund one went to meet Baldock's parents before the signing, old school-style.

jastons wrote: Mon Jan 27, 2020 11:54 am Not necessarily. I'm of the opinion that we are so, so bad (and have been getting progressively worse since Oxford) that 2/3 players who can do the basics right - run about a bit upfront, deliver the ball into the box with some kind of accuracy and track runners - would improve us massively.
I disagree on the type of player, but I agree with the general sentiment. What we really need is pace and skill in midfield. Changing that lets us get far more out of the players we have. Watching some of the recent matches, you can just see heads go down when a player on the wing tries to break, turns to the middle for a 1-2 and there is nobody there. Or when he plays it into the middle, runs hard and the ball never comes back because there was a slight bit of pressure and our CM decided to backpass. On the other hand I do see the need for someone up front if we can't count on Antonio. Haller has lost some motivation, but likewise you often see him early in games doing a good bit of running, using his body to win a header... he turns.... nobody within 25 yards of him. Happens 5-6 times and his energy evaporates.

TL:DR- we need midfield help and pace, if we get it we may well see a sudden improvement from many of our other struggling players that makes the entire side look much better
