Irons Supporting Foodbanks

Thanks to all who dropped donations off and put cash in the buckets yesterday. We collected about 50 kg of food and toiletries and a few £100's in cash. We'll know the exact amount on Wednesday.

That's over a third of a tonne collected in about 7 hours since we started. By comparison, I was invited to view the Hackney Foodbank warehouse on Friday, where they tell me they receive about a tonne in donations in 1 week. That's the power of fan activism that proves the importance of what our fans do by comparison, so thanks to Hammers fans and you folks on behalf of the guys at Newham Foodbank. I saw figures recently that show Newham, Tower Hamlets and Hackney are the 3 worst areas in the country suffering from child poverty, at approx 50% of households.

We're grateful to the boss for promoting what we do and collecting with us. If anyone else wants to stand with us for an hour or so on a match day then drop us a line on here or at ironsfoodbank@gmail.com. We've seen that Liverpool fans will be making a donation to us this Wednesday, so fair play to them. Also, a family of Brighton fans, where they don't even have a football food bank has been in touch to say that they'll be dropping food off for us next Saturday.

Also, they will accept home deliveries of non-perishables on Monday to Friday, from 11-5pm to their warehouse at:

For your info in the 4 sessions we've had so far West Ham fans have donated approx £1700, plus approx 380 kg in non-perishable food and toiletries to Newham Foodbank for which they're grateful and pass on their thanks.

Big thanks to everyone who contributed to the @iFoodbanks bucket and tin collection on Saturday by the Aquatics Centre, prior to the Brighton game.

The team, organised and directed by our very own by NorthernIron managed to collect a shade under £400 plus plenty of much-needed food, all of which goes straight to the local community via the Newham Foodbank initiative.

Our next foodbank collection is set for next Saturday from 12 noon antil 2.30pm. If anyone is on the way to any of the pre-match events then please drop by with a tin or a few bob, it all makes a difference to Newham Foodbank. We'll be in the usual place, by the boris bikes on the way to the stadium and aquatics centre, opposite the information office and new wooden building.

We've also set up a chocolate egg appeal for the kids at Easter time. Over 51% of Newham kids are living below the poverty line, it's not their or their families fault, let's just give them a small treat. We'll be grateful for any egg donations at our 2 pre-Easter games, which will be distributed by the Newham Foodbank.

Some of us from Irons Supporting Foodbanks will be at Anfield on Monday making donations to the SOS foodbank. I'm told that we are featured in Monday's matchday programme.

Just as we were beginning to get momentum with our collections since Christmas which Newham Foodbank were relying on, we've lost our opportunity to collect from those attending the London Stadium and Olympic Park on match days.

Newham Foodbank are now struggling to get donations to fulfill demand. Last Friday evening one of the volunteers advised that they're even running short of tea, coffee and sugar. The Foodbank now gives out a few hundred emergency 3-day food packs a month from their 7 centres across the borough. They really need our help. Just a few bob donated to give.net/newham_foodbank will make a difference, and they've see some extra donations there over the last few days. They're being quoted 2-3 week delivery delays for supermarket deliveries to their warehouse

It's been reported that Delaware North donated nearly 200 lunch packs due for today's match to the Whitechapel Mission, a great gesture. Newham aren't set up to distribute fresh food, they don't have the facility. The best that they can do for any which comes their way is leave it in a 'help yourself' box outside the main door of the Beckton warehouse.

We've seen in the last 24 hours that other clubs have donated significant amounts to their associated foodbanks: Liverpool players and staff donated £40k for tomorrow's cancelled game, and have pledged a further £10k for every future cancelled game. Man City also donated an unknown amount to the Ciy Fans foodbank appeal.

Finally, a bit more positive news. Two weeks ago we set up the chocolate egg appeal for Newham kids at Easter. The Club has donated 250 eggs, plus £200-worth from Expedient Security. We've also received pledges from LLDC, Newham Council, the Met Police and our newest support partner Spire London East Hospital
