Re: David Moyes - 18th Permanent Manager of WHUFC
Loved both as WHU players but it's still Di Canio that comes out on top. Not only did he produce his magical talents for longer whilst playing for us, he did it throughout his career wherever he played. Payet has blown more hot and cold, even for a time with us in the 2nd season.
What let Di Canio down was his hot headedness and over zealous passion (which obviously landed him in hot water ie Ref push), not that he couldn't be bothered at times like say Payet. In that regard he was more dedicated and professional, as he also was a Trainer. He also definitely worked more harder than Payet did on the pitch, chasing and harrying back into the midfield to help retrieve possession. No Uber Eats style phases with him. I even think he scored better, more outrageous imaginative gravity defying goals than Payet, who was also capable of the sublime at times, just not quite on Di Canios level though. A warm fuzzy debate to have but still only one winner for me.

Yeah, that is a good point. Di Canio was capable of ludicrous invention. He was not afraid to go for the extremely low possibility maneuver that results in the most beautiful of goals. It is a talent very few have (Gazza, Ginola, Bergkamp, etc have it)

Really enjoying us not talking about Moyes.
For me the best way to explain it goes like this, Di canio was at a 9/10 for us for a long time, Payet was a 13/10 for one season with a 8/10 the next.

I tend to agree that Di Canio was (and is) a much better player for West Ham than Payet. However, he is as mad as a sack full of cats and never in a million years should he ever, ever be near our club again.

Re: David Moyes - 18th Permanent Manager of WHUFC
For all Payet is a very good player, he would kill for all these medals:
Lazio
Serie B promotion: 1987–88
Supercoppa Italiana runner-up: 2004
Juventus
UEFA Cup: 1992–93
Coppa Italia runner-up: 1991–92
Milan
Serie A: 1995–96
UEFA Super Cup: 1994
UEFA Champions League runner-up: 1994–95
Intercontinental Cup runner-up: 1994
West Ham United
UEFA Intertoto Cup: 1999
Di Canio was so good he was a colleague of Roberto Baggio, Ruud Gullit, Marco Van Basten and George Weah. People will say he never got a cap, but he was behind people like Vialli, Baggio and Del Pierro. He was also way too much of a maverick, though he did get a B-cap. Hell, even the great Roberto Mancini struggled to get a game for Italy.
Payet never really got to play with people of that class, bar the occasional get together with France.

Re: David Moyes - 18th Permanent Manager of WHUFC
Based entirely on memory - as the time gap between them was pretty substantial - I think PDC shades it for me, but both were truly amazing players. I recall Payet having a somewhat quiet patch, although he usually still popped up with a worldie free-kick. That solo goal vs Boro too...!
PDC would surely have won a ton of Italian caps if he weren't a nutter.
Shame we didn't get to see more of Tevez because we'd have been have talking about him in the same breath too.

Re: David Moyes - 18th Permanent Manager of WHUFC
He wasn’t good enough to oust the players in the Italian team of that period. That’s why he didn’t win more caps.steveyrockstar wrote: ↑Sat Feb 15, 2020 12:14 amPDC would surely have won a ton of Italian caps if he weren't a nutter
Del Piero, Baggio, Vieri, Inzaghi, Totti, Delvecchio, Casiraghi, Zola...
Great as he was, he had nothing on any of that lot.

Dunno about that. I mean he was signed by both Juve and Milan. He was just a loose cannon.
I mean, Italy were so good guys like Mancini and Marco Simone could hardly get a game! They were producing ridiculous strikers at that time.

His ability was definitely on their level, it was his temperament that was the big question mark hanging over him and sadly he never got the chance to prove he could mix it with the best. Personally, I reckon he would have surprised people and been a valuable member of the squad during that time. We'll never know either now though.

It's like le Tessier for England. Why chance it when the ones you have are performing. No need for a maverick if things are ticking along

Re: David Moyes - 18th Permanent Manager of WHUFC
He is 32 with 24 caps for France.
We put him back on the map and into that French team along with his scintillating displays.
He repaid us by taking his Million loyalty bonus and halfway through the season when we were near relegation zone, he walked out.
With his ability he should have had the career of an Eden Hazard or similar but obviously he has mental issues.
Cant believe he has been labeled a star and put alongside Di Canio.
Whatever was going on in his private life you sort it out. You cannot walk out and abandon a club like he did.
f*** him.

This thread needs to get back on topic please.
Start a new thread titled Payet v Di Canio or whatever, but this thread is not the place for it.
Cheers.

Re: David Moyes - 18th Permanent Manager of WHUFC
I can’t find the video now, but didn’t David Moyes use pretty much his first post-match interview at Sunderland to prepare the fans for a relegation battle?
I remember thinking at the time, ”I’m glad he’s not our manager.”

Di Canio was committed to himself. No club, if he didn’t fancy it he wouldn’t turn up, literally and metaphorically. Even when on th edit history, if he wasn’t getting the service he wanted he would drift on tot the left wing with the hump.
Technically excellent, emotionally questionable and individually focused. Absolutely classic West Ham.

Wow, Italy were so good that players of PDC's ability couldn't get a look-in? Years later, Italy are fielding players like Diamanti and Zaza
