:newthumb: Absolutely. Why wasn't anyone there advising them? 'Don't f*ck about son, just whack it as hard as you can in one of the corners very low or very high. As highly paid professional footballers, they should be able to do that at least.

It doesn't matter how much you get paid, being able to hit an exact spot in the corner of the goal at pace under extreme pressure is not easy at all
Most that footballers do on pitch is instinctive. A penalty shoot out is the exact opposite

Marcus Rashford's statement is hard to read. That's too much of a burden for a young man to place on himself. It wasn't a life or death moment, and what he does away from the game is incomparably more important. I genuinely feel for the man.

Difficult read, I don't watch much Man Utd unless they're playing us but I thought he had a decent season on the pitch and has done great work off it.

I wonder if the coaching staff knew how much he'd been struggling and might have realised whether bringing him on in the 119th minute to take a pen when he hadn't kicked a ball since the warm up was the best idea for a lad lacking in confidence.

Would love him at West Ham but would never happen in a million years.

In terms of attraction as a club, I certainly wouldn't say never. It's these kind of good but not quite first team regular players at top clubs that a Europa League level kind of club should be going for (see Lingard) - but you're right in terms of our board and wages offered etc. That may well change though... one can hope.

All the consistently best penalty takers have their routine so well drilled it's automated. There will still be occasions when they miss or it's saved, that's inevitable, but those two looked like they were making it up as they went along. Just like Zaza and Lookman.
Spot on…Kane is our best penalty taker. Pretty much exclusively he takes the same pen….Don’mma knew that…went the right way, but Kane still beat him easily as he invariably slams it into the inside of the side netting. That is just pure practice, practice and more practice of the same, repeatable thing so it becomes automatic and very difficult to stop.

I could be wrong but I thought I saw the two Goalkeepers move before the ball had been struck on more than one occasion but especially young Saka's .

Penalties is a crappy way to win or lose a tournament , change the rules to whoever scores first then no individual is to blame .

Was just thinking that TOMoS after hearing about Rashford's statement on tv. With the world we live in today and the vicious people that lurk on social media, it would certainly stop a lot of hate and abuse being bandied about.

There's some horrible bastads about :furrow:

I thought the whole penalty 'strategy' from the manager was hideous. To send those lads on there in the dying seconds to take a penalty????? Pressure situation as it is but that was an un-necessary burden for them.

On the positive side, they may get to appear in a Pizza advert further down the line OFT  But then again if it's Italian that would be proper rubbing their faces in it!

Even if Saka hadn't taken that last kick and we went past the first five penalties, he'd still have had to take a sudden death one at some stage which is effectively what his was.

I too thought this thread was about Rashford's twinketoes effort.

However good Southgate is, that was a really poor management decision.
As for the pathetic racists, even if we'd have won they'd have still been at it.

WCpete wrote: Mon Jul 12, 2021 7:21 pm Gareth could have been a genius if he had brought Nobes into the squad, not played him a single minute until the 119th minute of the final, and then given him one of those final 3 pens. Job done.

I’ve been discussing with mates this exact type of thinking. There are very view specialist English penalty takers. Kane, Vardy, Ward Prowse & Noble stand out.

Whilst I wouldn’t have taken Noble, JWP was a no brainer as an ET sub for such a situation. Bellingham & White very unlikely to ever feature.

Very hard to win tournaments without winning a shootout. Italy won 2 of them.

Chilavert usee to take penalties for Paraguayxperience who also has great kicking technique
Two things to think through

1. Had Pickford ever done this before - i.e. engaged in a penalty shoot-out as the taker, not the keeper? If he hadn't that would be immense pressure on his shoulders, even more so than on a striker's who doesn't take them for his club

2. If Pickford had missed, but, sake of argument, we had not been eliminated in that moment, what effect would have had on his day job, of saving the next one they took against him?

In theory, I can see your point, as much as it still seems odd to me that there are some players playing for their countries who can't be trusted to kick it as hard as possible towards the corner of the goal, but, if there had been no practice with Pickford taking the 4th or 5th penalty, putting that theory to the test in those conditions would still, if I may say so, have been an odd idea and not one 'safety-first' Southgate would have come up with.

I doubt hardly any of the squad had taken part in a penalty shoot out, or very many of them, so all in the same boat there. Saka had only ever taken two penalties in a competitive game before both youth matches.
Pickford was down to go after Saka I think, if the video of Southgate selecting players before the shoot out is anything to go by, so deemed better than other outfield players

When I played, only half decent saturday standard, our keepers were superb penalty takers as they could hit a football with pace and power every time without fail. In a penalty shoot out you need players who are going to hit the ball true and between the posts! They didn't worry about where they were going to place it or trying to trick the keeper, just walloped it - which removed a lot of self doubt from the process.

Anyway I am more disappointed John Stones or Luke Shaw were not higher up the pecking order. Both have the experience (not of penalty shoot outs but of handling pressure) and both have very good technique. I would expect Shaw to be a good penalty taker in the same way Cresswell would be

Calvert-Lewin had taken three and scored all three, still not sure why he didn't come on to take one! From the bench him and Rashford would've been my choices.
