Re: Alphonse Areola
From Fulham site last year....
"First a combination of Alphonse Areola and Ola Aina blocked Arthur Masuaku’s angled drive, before the Fulham ‘keeper palmed over Aaron Cresswell’s moving effort from the edge of the box seconds later.
Then a wicked Jarrod Bowen volley was heading in until Areola’s reflex save – one all the more impressive considering it had deflected off the head of Aleksandar Mitrović. Sebastien Haller clipped the bar with his header from the subsequent corner."
I do remember he was decent that night.

I make you right though tbh[/size=50]
Lol I thought someone might call me Sam.
Total confidence in a keeper allows defenders to concentrate on the attacking side more.

Re: Alphonse Areola
Welcome Areola.
A view from my Fulham friend:
"Bit flappy / punchy at times
Started slow but was arguably our best player last year
But I think most relegated clubs seem to say that as it’s the busiest player in the pitch for them lol
If a team has 30 shots in a game, your likely to pull off a few Worldy saves"

Re: Alphonse Areola
The best keeper we could have signed for the least possible initial outlay.
Sensible signing considering the other gaps in our squad that require investment.

Re: Alphonse Areola
He does seem very punchy when it comes to saves...not a bad thing to be honest most of the time.Croydon wrote: ↑Thu Jul 29, 2021 9:26 pm Welcome Areola.

Re: Alphonse Areola
Welcome Alphonse!
The long wait for a proper signing this Summer is finally over. And this is a proper signing. Suddenly we look like a club thinking five years ahead.
I'm sure both him and Fab will get plenty of game time this season with the League, Europe and both domestic Cups. Beds him in for a season and I can only see him being our number one for quite a while after.
I thought he looked great for Fulham last season. Chuffed.
Now... Striker, please.

Re: Alphonse Areola
That is just a modern keeper thing, especially abroad.
As you say, with the newer balls it is the safer option most of the time but it will annoy a fair few of our fans after the more old school Fab
Re: Alphonse Areola
fab does it because he's skilled, not because he's old school
if you can hold onto the ball it is the safer option, the question is - can the keeper hold onto it or is he likely to fumble it
fab simply has a higher skill threshold when it comes to this particular skill which is why he tends to do it

Re: Alphonse Areola
It isn't how goalkeepers are coached now. You won't find many keepers under 30 who look to catch the ball as standard. It isn't how they are trained. Get as much on it as you can is seen as the safer option with the new balls that spin and move in the air like a b*stard.b0x wrote: ↑Fri Jul 30, 2021 1:11 pm fab does it because he's skilled, not because he's old school

You will also forgive me doubting your assessment of Fab's skills when you classed Randolph as "excellent"... Fab also didn't get the nickname he did before due to his higher skill threshold catching a ball...

Re: Alphonse Areola
Goalkeepers are trained to punch the ball.
Buffon is the most famous example of a regular puncher.

catching the ball is still trained, significantly, it's a judgement call on the keeper whether to catch or punch it, if they can do the former and without mistakes then that is ideal

Re: Alphonse Areola
Dont want to be the party spoiler but on his highlights
He seems to punch back into the danger zone rather than wide or a distance out .I can see quick forwards pouncing on these hopefully he'll get it coached out of him.

Don't know how true the figures are in the above link.
Loan fee of £1.7 m
We have the option to buy after Loan deal next summer unless
he plays an un-named amount of games then we have to buy expected to be £10m to £11m
Salary is currently between £120k to £160k a week and we will cover most of it during the loan period
