If you offered Calvert-Lewin to join a club who finished 6th last season, 2-3 points outside the Champions League, competing for it again this season, in the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup and in the last 16 of the Europa League. Or… to stay at a club who have done nothing for quite a few years now, more nearer to the drop zone than a European place and are completely going through the motions, which option do you think he’d choose right now?
Obviously if you isolated these factors it'd be an easy decision for any player.
But the reality is that our place among the upper echelons of the league is almost certainly a transient thing. A player like DCL, an established goalscorer, good enough to play at the top level and the perfect age, isn't looking at West Ham as the next step. In a year we could very easily be exactly where Everton are now. Lose Rice - Antonio, Cresswell, Dawson begin to notably decline - a couple of other players out of form or injured.
If you join Man United, at a minimum you're playing for and in Europe every year. And in a good season you're potentially challenging on all fronts. He'd be holding out for a move to somewhere like that. Little old West Ham's fleeting dance at the top is not turning as many players heads as you think it is.
We genuinely are not a step up from Everton.
