Watford away 28th Dec.

Post by w6hammer » Thu Dec 23, 2021 2:09 pm

Just seen Watford have an outbreak of Covid and thier boxing day game against Wolves is postponed.
Just heard on SSN that apparently they do not have 14 players available. However the premier league expect them to be ok to play us on the 28th.
If our game against the Saints goes ahead and likewise with Watford away how can that be fair on us as a club? .
Would mean we have to play 2 games in 3 days whilst Watford have not played since the 10th December.

I did read somewhere that Watford was including non vaccinated players as unavailable when another player/staff had tested positive.

Im not having a pop at you mate, but people keep going on about it being fair etc, The clubs agreed with the EPL what the criteria would be, we cant then start moaning about it.

Unfortunately that is the nature of a football season during a pandemic
Some will get an advantage and others might not
Those who do have games postponed will have to play more games in a short period of time later in the season, so that may be an advantage for their opponent
Also, having a covid outbreak isn't ideal for the club in question if a lot of players are impacted

I hear what your saying, but it does not alter the fact that we are disadvantaged if we have to play 2 games in 3 days .Hopefully we play Southampton and pull the covid card when it suits like everyone else.

As mentioned, we will be in the situation later in the season where we will have less games than our opponents due to fixture backlogs. Im not sure Watford not playing since 10th December is a huge advantage to them tbh

There are plenty of things that aren't fair during this period of disruption so I'm sure football fixtures are a long way down the list of priorities on the vast majority of our lists..

We play two days before and Watford would have had two weeks rest.

Ideal scenario is this game is called off.

Whole different ball game when your talking about a 48 hour rest. Our lads will walk out at Vicarage road at a clear disadvantage. By 60 minutes theyll be blowing out their arse.

See Arsenal are in the same boat...they have Wolves on Tuesday which will be a harder proposition than Watford...so I suppose it's swings and roundabouts

I mentioned on the Southampton game thread. I think people are getting carried away with the "teams getting a rest" thing. Its not like managers of these teams have been able to get get players in to the training ground, iron out issues etc. Training grounds have been closed, players have been in isolation. Even once they have been open again its a staggered return for players. Id say its been a disruption for most. The only benefit has been teams where players have been missing through injury and they have been able to get them called off without having to play a weakend team. Certainly didnt look as though it done Spurs any good last night. We were bar far the better side and i cant say they looked any fitter/fresher than us?!?!

Agree with those wanting this game off. Two games in three days is a joke if we are playing a team who have had 2 weeks off. I bet the vast majority of Watford's senior players have been fit. Plus we are bound to get some knocks if we do play on Boxing Day.

Last season we played Everton away on January 1st....it was our third game in six days. We had already played Brighton on Dec 27th.......and.....Southampton on Dec 29th.

Everton only had one game in that period ...on Dec 26th.........and had six complete rest days until the West Ham game.

West Ham won 0-1 and deservedly so on the night. It affected us not one jot. In fact, the lack of games seemed to affect Everton more.

It is what it is
We might get an advantage down the track

Sometimes it is good to be the winner and not the better team.
