Re: January 2022 Transfer Window
Scored two of the finest disallowed goals ever seen this past week though. Which didn't help Reading's scoreline but might have helped find him another gig.

Re: January 2022 Transfer Window
i really want a shiny new instant first team defender.
if you look at the title winning sides, they had the best defence that year. Liverpool (van dijk) and City (kompany) recently, even Man Utd going back a few years to rio and vidic. Arsenal and their "invincibles". I also have a strong hunch (i havent researched) the difference between 4th and 5th place over the last 20 years would have been down to defence and a couple extra goals conceded over the season turning wins into draws and draws into defeats. us last year is a perfect example.
not suggesting for half a second we will win the league, but our final position will depend on how porous our back line is - shore it up and we stand every chance of 4th. leave it alone and cross your fingers for when (only) kurt returns and we're likely looking at 6th at best.
come on Moysie, pull the trigger and go get that big dominating defender - or two. and a striker if you're in the mood obviously.

Re: January 2022 Transfer Window
I doubt it’ll happen for many reasons but signing Calvert-Lewin would be properly massive and if there was any chance of this we should be all over it. Excellent player who would suit out system down to the ground.
More realistically I don’t mind getting a loan to end of the season to cover the striker position (and can cover RW) if we can another high quality signing at the back in January.
1 x top quality LCB
AND
1 x mediocre (better than Yarma) loaner striker/RW cover
I would be happy with that and feel it would give us a good chance of top 4

Re: January 2022 Transfer Window
ok so despite the fact the last few seasons our top scorers have been:Bubbles Fortuna wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 11:29 am I'd have been livid if we spent £25 million on Chris Wood.
30 years old and bang average.
Antonio/soucek - 10 20/21
Antonio - 10 19/20
Anautovic 10 18/19
Arnautovic - 11 - 17/18
Wood has scored more each season (11-14) but he's bang average at Burnley and not worth £25mil apparently.
If he scores 10+ goals and keeps newcastle up, that is worth more than double his transfer fee to the club.
And if he scores that for the next three seasons.
Even with no sell on fee at 33 it's still worth £25mil.

Re: January 2022 Transfer Window
To Newcastle. Not to us.
Even then, if he carries on his current form he’s getting three goals and they have a 30 year old in the Champ they’ve paid £25m for. And, one day down the line, FFP will come in and £25m could look daft.
No point really discussing what anyone is worth by a Newcastle standard, blood money is endless.

I would love it if Andy helped keep Burnley up on Newcastle's expense

They play each other last day of the season. It would be incredible if Carroll scored the goal that relegated Newcastle.

I'm not so convinced - we create and miss loads of chances at the moment, coming in from both wings, or played through the middle. I think Hernandes could feast on that.

Shades of Dennis Law scoring the goal that relegated his beloved Manchester United when playing for Manchester City.

Yep but the problem with Hernandez was his build up play and team contribution was poor.Kludgehammer wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 1:20 pm I'm not so convinced - we create and miss loads of chances at the moment, coming in from both wings, or played through the middle. If he is your striker you don't create as many opportunities because it's like having 10 men during the build up (most of the time).
Hernandez receiving the ball back to goal, half way between the centre circle and penalty area helped no one. It was fine when he played in a dominant team.
I actually think the Defoe, Owen, Phillips, Hernandez strikers are a dying breed.
With 1 target man those guys are having to become wingers - Mason Greenwood for example.

Re: January 2022 Transfer Window
If it came down to that, I'd have a hunch that Andy would be unavailable due to Covid or an "injury".
Him scoring the winner to relegate Newcastle would be (for him) up there with the goal Dennis law scored against Man. Utd. when they were relegated in the seventies

That's from the same myth book as "Tevez goal at Old Trafford kept us up"Johnny Byrne's Boots wrote: ↑Fri Jan 14, 2022 1:27 pm Shades of Dennis Law scoring the goal that relegated his beloved Manchester United when playing for Manchester City.
Law's goal was inconsequential as even if Man U had won that game, Birmingham won to ensure they stayed up anyway

Re: January 2022 Transfer Window
If we had Hernandez rather than Antonio, we’d create a lot less. Defoe at least showed at Sunderland how good a footballer he was as he somehow became a solo striker and did a lot of work. Hernandez couldn’t do that, he couldn’t do what Antonio does and not only would the striker get less, the wingers would too.
I wish we still had him for the bench, but he came too late. He’d have thrived in the Payet team.
Id rather we not spend big on that type of striker. If we want an option who doesn’t work to replace Antonio but is there for impact, it needs to be a low fee and definitely not high wages.

Re: January 2022 Transfer Window
Arthur Cabral is an interesting one. Given how many clubs are looking for a striker at the moment, it seems odd nobody has (yet) bid on Cabral. Or if they have, it's not been leaked to the press.
I wonder why that is? Basel asking for way too much money, and PL sides think he's too risky?
Another observation - El Ghazi's loan move to Everton. I think that strongly suggests our reported interest in the player was from an agent trying to drum up interest in their client, and let the football world know he's available. Doubt we even considered him.

Re: January 2022 Transfer Window
Whoever we sign or don't sign in this window, is anybody else pleased that a certain Chairman isn't spouting off about every player in Europe and upsetting their clubs in the process?
