It is how we tend to do business in that area though. Fredericks, Antonee Robinson, Byram – if there's a deal going or a contractual run-down, we'll go window shopping for a fullback.
It depends.

Spurs did a lot of this on their rise from midtable. Bought very cheap from clubs in distress and then sold at a profit, which all goes into the pot for better players. Think of the Calumn Davenport's and Andy Reid's. Spurs were hoovering them up at rock bottom prices. That's how they got Bale, Carrick, Defoe, Walker.

So long as it isn't impacting the #1 priority of strengthening the first team.

D C wrote: Fri Jan 21, 2022 2:44 pm That’s how it seems. He would rather wait until the right target is available for a good price in the summer and target top 4 next season rather than pay over the odds now for a 2nd or 3rd target and still not make top 4 or a cup final etc then be left with what is his second choice player for another couple of seasons.

It’s not ideal, I like many would rather the club gambled and went all out to try and do as well as possible in the three competitions we’re left in but I just don’t think that Moyes will ever operate like that.

The main problem with that approach is it might look like a lack of ambition to Rice and Bowen who could well be off this summer
Mixed feelings for me, really.

I can see that we could do with an immediate injection of something in a few positions, but also get the rationale that we'd be better off buying one, stonewall, absolute starter for £30m than 3x£10m punts.

If it's the right £30m player, it would probably enthuse our better players more because there aren't many weaknesses in the first XI. Most of the first XI are performing at a high level for something.

I'm not sure what we need, but I know we need our season not to fade...it's not just about keeping Rice and Bowen, it's about who we're able to bring in if Rice and Bowen leave...

I've said this before, but if we get 200 mill plus from Rice and Bowen's sale, I can't imagine that Moyes would want to bring in a 10 20 mill players and build an entirely new team...he'd likely want to bring in a few, really really top quality players who fit in with the existing squad (a few 50-60 mill names maybe), and maybe some prospects to fill in the areas where we are getting older. The problem is, that level of player and prospect could be hard to attract if we're not in Europe...

That's the dilemma we're in now...

There's no way that Moyes and his entire backroom coaching staff would allow Longelo to leave on a perm unless they're very confident he won't make it as a first-team PL player with us.

I watched Longelo in the EL too, thought he did well. I also thought he had the easiest job of all four of the young defence as he basically got to play as a winger.

I didn't see anything that would make me think the coaches who know him would be making a mistake to let him go.

Lovejoy wrote: Fri Jan 21, 2022 5:36 pm Still maintain Grady should have been kept, he easily has shown enough and I’m sure moyes would have got a lot out of him. We effectively sold him and got Benrahma, like Benny although frustrating but not sure Diangana couldn’t have contributed what he has since he come in.

ngakia always looked rubbish to me so wasn’t that bothered about him

I'm sorry Lovejoy but this is nonsense. There is no evidence to suggest Diangana is even in the same league as Benrahma.

19/20 - Both in the Championship
Diangana 8 goals 6 assists
Benrahma 17 goals 9 assists

20/21 - Both in the Premiership
Diangana 1 goal 0 assists
Benrahma 1 goal 6 assists

21/22 - Diangana Championship, Benrahma Premiership
Diangana 1 goal 1 assist
Benrahma 5 goals 4 assists

Considering Diangana's sale covered a big chunk of Benrahma's fee, that was really good business on our part. They are absolutely leagues apart.

I desperately want to keep them both, but everyone has to sell players. £200 million could do an awful lots for us, but I'd want closer to £250 million for the pair, and if we were offered that I don't think we'd be able to turn it down.

If we couldn't do any good with £200m then we might as well give up.

There's absolutely no chance imo that we would get £200 combined for Rice and Bowen, could be wrong, but I just don't see them being worth that amount for another team to spend it on 🤷‍♂️

£120m for Rice (Bare minimum)
£75m for Bowen

£200m is about right.

Not that we should have any intention to sell either currently.

Buchanan has been capped at every youth level for England including the U21s. He’s not the finished article yet, but already a good left back. He is defensively superior to Masuaku, and could be a good understudy/ successor to Cresswell. He is already better than Robinson, and has a lot more potential.

We can’t even spend 2 million at the moment - what hope would we have of spending 200?

This is actually a bloody good point! Astute as Moyes is in the transfer market, the one and only time his had that much money to play with was at Man U and we know how that turned out

It really isn’t, I knew Benrahma had better stats but sometimes they can be misleading. They was both brilliant in the championship when Grady was on loan at WBA. The stats for the premiership aren’t really fair considering how shocking WBA was.

It isn’t a dig at Benrahma cos I like him although I was probably expecting a bit more. And going off your stats they are hardly phenomenal from Benrahma, my point was moyes could have got a similar tune out of Grady. Leagues apart is a massive over exaggeration imo.

It’s old news so moot point but I still think selling Dianagana was wrong from the club, not moyes cos I think it was over his head.

Nah mate fans know best! watched him once, absolute madness to let him leave :crylol:

Fact he hasn't been brought into the first team since and Ashby, Perkins and Baptiste have.... shows who the clubs coaches rate.
