My God we really are starved for transfer news aren’t we, discussing Rooney for two pages…

We aren’t Everton, we aren’t Man U, there has to be a different thread to talk about whether Wayne Rooney was a generational talent and whether him and Gerard were same level.
Beat me to it! Agreed. I was looking, and thought this was a West Ham transfer thread!

I’ve already said Rice is a first class player. But the gap between him and Rooney is enormous.
Rooney went for 27 million (including add ons) in 2004. That's £38 million in todays money (adjusted for inflation).

Declan Rice is valued conservatively at £100 million.

'Enormous gap' indeed......

Everton did alright after they sold Rooney didn't they? Did Moyes get the full transfer fee to reinvest? Our boy ain't going anywhere in a hurry anyway!
Moyes did spend some of the Rooney money. I recall, he signed that bloke, wide left, can't remember his name now, but Billy, something or other. If it wasn't Billydinho, it was something very similar

I’ve said it on this thread before, many times, and I’ll say it again:

I cannot believe there is not a striker in the whole of world football who cannot do a job for us. I have faith in Moyes and want him to choose his own man, but to not sign one will be a dereliction of duty. Antonio is knackered and Bowen is not a long term solution.

Daka and Eduord were both gettable, would have improved us and we should have sorted one out.

It’s hugely frustrating.

Yup signed:

England Marcus Bent - England Ipswich Town, £450,000, 23 June[6]
Australia Tim Cahill - England Millwall, undisclosed (estimated £2,000,000), 23 July[7]
Australia Eddy Bosnar - Austria Sturm Graz, free, 4 August[8]
England James Beattie - England Southampton, £6,000,000, 4 January[9]
Spain Mikel Arteta - Spain Real Sociedad, five-month loan, 1 February[10]
Iceland Bjarni Viðarsson - Iceland FH, undisclosed

Bent was amazing value for money!

Daka is a good example. I think we were in for him but he chose Leicester.... where he's had some success but nothing spectacular. Signing him would mean we don't then sign the guy who's gonna make a real difference. Maybe Moyes did really want him, I don't know. But would you want Daka last summer if it means not getting Schick in six months? For example.

Yeah, though a lot of people slagged Edouard off for some reason in the summer. Many felt he wouldn’t be good enough as he had been plying his trade for Celtic.

We all know football inflation is different from real world inflation.

£27 million these days barely gets you a championship striker.

I think the strikers Moyes has wanted in the last year or so were..

Toney - Brentford got promoted
Daka - chose Leicester
Abraham - Chose Roma

Makes you wonder if the DCL links have some truth to them..

Daka and Edouard are decent enough prem standard strikers. However, I think Moyes is looking for a striker that is a class above (DCL or El Nesyri).

If Moyes gets his man this window then we will marvel at his aspirations for our club and self flagellate for doubting him.

Daka has 9 goals in all competitions this season - the same as Antonio. Yes I would have really liked him.

There is absolutely no evidence we will sign a player, let alone one of of Schick’s quality in 6 months. We all assumed we would be signing someone once Haller left and that hasn’t materialised.

So yes, I would have preferred we signed a striker in the summer. The real difference is between us and other clubs who don’t have to rely on a threadbare squad.

I personally think he put all of his eggs into one basket with Abraham last Summer. I didn’t really think we were serious about Daka or Toney in the same way that I don’t think we were serious about Milenkovic when the primary target was Zouma.

I admire Moyes ambition very much in that he is targeting champions league quality players. Hope he gets who he is after.

Cahill proved an astonishing signing as was Arteta, the rest were a bit iffy, though

I make you right about Abraham, we tried to play the game with Chelsea over his price (with Moyes saying he was too rich for us in the press), I don't think he wanted Daka (no PL experience), but would have been interested in Toney if they hadn't gone up.

If there is any chance of us signing DCL (which I don’t believe for one second) we should be doing absolutely everything in our power to get it done. It would be a real massive game changer IMO and would announce us as real challengers rather than just ‘imposters’ around the top places
