I've never seen Top Gun. My son took me to see this on Sunday for Father's Day.

Not my cup of tea at all, but I dare say I found it quite enjoyable.

Though I too was expecting to hear, "Red Five, I'm going in" or "use the force, Pete" at some point...

The problem is I'd listened to the hype about this, off a number of sources, and expected to be completely blown away. I was expecting a huge upgrade on the first film.

But basically it was the first film just remade with all the same concepts in the pot.

1) Commander who doesn't like Maverick. Check
2) Pilots who all disrespect a member of their training staff in a bar before they know who they are. Check
3) One of the Top Gun pilots is a self centered asshole. Check
4) Hard deck rule is ignored. Check
5) Love interest scenario. Check
6) Talk to me Goose line. Check

I could go on.....

I did enjoy it as an action movie, the stuntwork and flying is brilliant, but it wasn't as intelligent as I hoped it would be. 7/10

Saw it while on holiday last week, had to smile at the mission plan, but ultimately it was enjoyable and far better than trudging around gift shops in the rain.

Never seen it. Never seen The Firm, Risky Business, A Few Good Men, Edge of Tomorrow, Valkyrie or Born on the Fourth of July. Didn't like The Mummy, Oblivion, Days of Thunder, Top Gun or Cocktail. Watched about ten minutes of one of the Jack Reacher films - I don't know which one - and switched it off. M:I-2 was okay but also bitterly disappointing given John Woo was at the helm. Jerry Maguire was okay but no more than that. I like Rain Man, The Last Samurai, M:I-3 and Eyes Wide Shut, they just missed the cut for me.

As to Top Gun: Maverick, I'm still not especially interested per se but the (largely) rave reviews and big big numbers are beginning to pique my curiosity at least. Might find myself checking it out just to see what the hubbub's about

actually liked The Color of Money but nowhere near as good as The Hustler imvho

A Few Good Men is right up there on a top 10 list that changes depending upon....

Jerry McGuire was decent. The Last Samurai thought was VERY good.

Rain Man was awesome but more so I think, for Dustin Hoffman in the lead role. overshadowed Cruise by a long way but of course that's understandable.

Like you, some of the others never really struck me as something I would be interested in, so I might have missed a pretty good film.

the M-I series I can really take or leave. I think I might have watched 2 or 3 of them, 1 completely all the way through, the other(s) some and then some more etc. etc.

the Jack Reacher ones well, I'm a big fan of the Reacher books and anyone who is sort of laughed at his portrayal, but I watched one with a friend one time who had no clue who Reacher is and she throroughly enjoyed the film. I'm pretty sure it was the first one.

Cocktail was truly dreadful.

Having only said that last night, I've just bought Top Gun on blu-ray, because it was there for a fiver, and because maybe I'll like it a bit more this time. And, even if I don't, it's a bona fide 80s staple so it'll sit well enough amongst my 80s movies. So there.

Ironic thing about Rain Man is Hoffman gets all the praise, but it’s Cruise’s character who grows and changes through the course of the movie. I guess his performance gets underrated quite a bit due to Hoffman hamming it up with aplomb.

For a film buff who has a bath tub made of of old dvd vinyl I find that remarkable.

The above are all excellent films. Stop watching Starship Troopers 73, the return of the bath monster and check them out.

I would go along with that in the main. Both seem to pick their films well.

The Last Samurai is one of my favourite Cruise films along with Jerry Maguire and Collateral

You want answers? You want the truth?? You can't HANDLE the truth!!

I've no doubt they're crackling movies (well, maybe not Valkyrie; the other two, for sure) but they've never compelled me to watch them. If a film says to me, say, "Hey! You! Come here, we've got Godzilla AND Mechagodzilla punching each other's faces off!", I'm all in. If a film says to me, "Hey! You! Come here, we've got a military courtroom drama going on!"... well, I'm going to need slightly more romancing. Some might say, "Elsie, you're a ****ing moron" and they may well have a point, but I've got to feel suitably enthused about a movie going in. That's not to say that I only watch trash and I may well watch Born on the Fourth of July or even A Few Good Men at some stage but my "to watch" pile is a colossal mountain at this stage and certain types of movie make it to the top of that mountain quicker than others.
